  1. I wish minidisco get them soon. The last MD models TDK made haven't made their way to the usual MD/japanese import sites yet (as far as I se). I would buy a bunch of these, or even better anyone from Japan can get them 4 a brother.
  2. Recently I read an article in which Sony had made a device that records in the MPEG-4 format directly to Memory Stick Pro Duo cards. I know Neuros is doing it as well, since I own the Neuros device. What I would love to see is Sony create a device that would record to Hi-MD as well as Memory Stick Pro Duo for people to watch on their TV or PC. Sony has set out patents to do such things. Sony needs to realize there is still much money to be made on the Hi-MD format. They simply need to listen to all who post on this form. I absolutely agree that Sony must build a Hi-MD deck (as I posted earlier), but some ideas that some of you have posted would really be great. For example a dual deck with multiple digital inputs and outputs would be the solution for many of us. What I would also like to see is a deck that would allow you to transcode video material from your computer to minidisc. If somehow, you could have those editing abilities you have on minidisc audio, added to a video device, now you have something in which television people could use to edit on the field. Sony needs to realize that minidisc is one of the best formats they have ever created. They need to focus it to the needs of the pro and semi-pros, however keep stuff around for audiophiles. If they extend this to video we have the perfect medium.
  3. a Hi-MD deck is an absolute must. For doing anything professional, a deck would be best, and one with digital input and output. I would buy two if they can sell one for less than $300. It would cost about $450-600 from audiocubes and Onkyo shelf system X-B8 sells for $1K. No way! It's a shame we can not get a U.S. based Hi-MD deck. A car system not too worried about.

  5. The future of Hi-MD? I sincerely hope that when you go over there, if at all possible try to get an interview with Stringer about this, if not at the convention, at a later date. Also, maybe we need to work with Sony, Sharp (amongst others) in perhaps having a MDE (MiniDisc Expo) of our own, perhaps someplace in New York City one year, in California the next, etc. for both the people who just love the format as well as the musician/broadcast industry. For one it would be nice if they actually made a U.S. Hi-MD MiniDisc deck for professionals. Also would love to see if this is the year that they come out with Hi-MD Video. A little rant: Someone at the Sony Store (550 Madison Avenue, NYC) told me that not one unit of the Hi-MD Camera sold at that store, yet. I'm not surprised by that only because of the fact you do not have any inputs, rendering it simply as a playback device/downloader, plus 1.3 megapixels wouldn't do the job for a pro. Would love to see the AAC codec added to MiniDisc as well. Was a little upset that UMD's were used in PSPs, seemed to be a great way to keep the format alive. MiniDisc America: The few, the proud, the ___________ (Fill in the blanks)! LOL!
  6. Wish list for Hi-MD: 1. Upload Net-MD recordings to PC. 2. Sell Hi-MD decks and bookshelf systems in the United States. 3. All systems are PC/MAC compatible. 4. No hidden file structure. 5. Ability to copy from 1 Hi-MD to another in seconds.

As someone who does production work and is working to be in the media industry (TV/radio), Minidisc was one of the things that had been highly recommended for usage to make work much more efficient. With the advent of Hi-MD, uploading to ouir systems became a no-brainer. It would be a complete shame to let this go to complete waste. Nothing records better than minidisc, and Sony has to see that musicians, broadcasters and the like will still support the product, in fact I think they should see more units (on a limited basis) in America. It has been long enough, we should have seen home-based Hi-MD units for the home studio. Sony needs to realize that the bread and butter of minidisc users are professionals and semi-professional folks wanting to record live events. They need to stop focusing on the music end of things. Stop selling Net-MD products and focus on how Hi-MD can save your files and record your projects faster, with better sound and ease for the end user, along with coming out with larger capacity Hi-MD blanks. If they continue focusing on the music end, then they need to add video capabilities as well. If they decide to get rid of this great format, maybe we need to tell Sony to sell the trademarks of Hi-MD and minidisc to someone who is willing to continue and expand its format. I kinda thought Hi-MD was dead when a similar format the UMD was being used in PSPs instead of Hi-MD. Why not use Hi-MD with PSP, right? Maybe someone on this board can collect signatures to get Sony to sell its Hi-MD/Minidisc trademarks, etc. to another company.
  8. You must set Sonic Stage to transfer the device as is, or it will transfer the device to what you have it defaulted to, and with older Hi-MD devices it is a choice of three (256,64,48). With the NW-HD3 (that I have) it was also a choice of three as far as ATRAC compression goes.

It has had a very bad start to things over here in the United States as well, the low end model gets skipped over at major stores, and for the core fans, they are getting frustrated not being able to get the 1GB blanks, and how come no one else is making 1GB blanks, yet. This could be the solution to the problem. Also no home units in the U.S.. These guys are very smart! LOL! Even the guys who work for them at the Sony Style NYC store has to bad mouth them, for some of them would like to get some 1GB blanks, and they can't. I check at least once a week there. I agree at some point for a music player, I will own the 40GB iPod (or whatever their high-end AAC/mp3 player will be). However, the recording as you said is the selling point, and Sony mismanages again, with DRM features on WAV recordings. What are they thinking! Marketed correctly, Minidisc would be mainstream here in the U.S. They need to market it in three ways: 1: Recording, Recording, Recording of your studio sessions 2: Converting your old mixtapes and records to a new, permanent format. (You can do it directly with some devices, BTW, STOP selling player only devices) 3: Burn Baby Burn (Using as a data storage medium). Start making Hi-MD drives so that people can move their data files or ATRAC files as audio to an actual drive within your computer. In fact they should have these drives standard within all of their computers to start. Think about having your next version of Windows bootable on Hi-MD minidisc. 4: DISCONTINUE NET-MD. With backwards functionality of Hi-MD, it is absolutely not necessary to sell Net-MD devices. Discontinue the MZNH600, and have the MZNH800 be the low end model. In fact, the latter models of the MZNH800 should look more like the MZNF520 (white) 5: STOP WITH DRM ON YOUR RECORDINGS: This will only hurt your sales in the long-run. People will want to record and then transfer their stuff to another medium in order to edit them or listen to them on a HDP, or even another Hi-MD minidisc after editing. 6: Partnerships: Immediately Sony should have partnered with current MD makers, to make 1GB blanks all over and to have the best designs possible brought to this new format. You have the patents to this technology, let others make new recorders, blanks, home units, etc. along with you so that your new technology can get more market share. 7: Design (Reiterating point 4): All these slick new designs that you have in your Net-MD players/recoders since you annnounced Hi-MD, should be incoporated into Hi-MD. Do what Real player did and drop your MD prices. Net MD right now, should cost no more than $50, and the low end Hi-MD player should cost $149 (and should have a radio/TV/weather band). The MZ-NH1 should cost no more than $299.
  11. Sony would NEVER do it, because it still belives in its own portable players and would have us all using Minidisc under their terms. And personally, I don't think the Japanese execs give a damn about us, which is their problem to begin with. Personally, I think (and I know record companies agree with this notion), that all digital music players that have music stores should support all the major codecs (including: mp3/mp3PRO, AAC, ATRAC/ATRAC3(plus), WMA, and OGG). The notion that I have to burn a CD to get around the codec issue is horrible; we should be able to download a compatible verison for our selected players. Beleive it or not, record companies could actually be our ally on this one, folks, because then, maybe then, would software developers make their stuff to support all portable digital media, whether iPod, Hi-MD, Sony's ATRAC HD players, or any mp3/OGG players out there. Own: MZ-NH1 (The best damn MD player/recorder on the planet).
