Ey.... exact same reason. I play violin (and guitar) and wanted something portable which I could record and listen to which wouldn't be so bulky. However, I got the mznh700 model cause I didn't really need the extra features and would rather save up the money for something useful (or keep it for the next gen models if they have something useful and revolutionary - like unlimited transfers back to pc *fingers crossed*)

does the subraction rule still apply? i mean, "adding" to a frequency used to cause noise back in the old days... does it apply to today? me personally, i don't use the equaliser. rather tweak the files as waves on the hdd and then put it on md with the settings i like.
-
sounds pretty cool, but since I've got the mznh700, I don't want to connect the usb port all the time. That protective cover looks like it will snap off with even normal use! has anyone had this happen to them with any recorder? and i don't mean because you ripped it off either.
-
sigh, i just wish sony would just stop acting like an over-protective mother!
-
Are you trying to connect through a usb hub or direct to pc. make sure it's not a hub of sorts because while they allow multiple things to connect via usb, the voltage is reduced for each output. The MD requires the full 5v.
-
I just wish sony would allow us to record in 132kbps while in Hi-MD mode (and I mean live-recordings) I would like that option to be able to go half-way and still be able to make a MD->PC transfer!!!
-
this is intresting... have you tried using simple-burner? what about real-time transfer? perhaps it has something to do with the encoding?
-
I couldn't tell the difference. although, i wasn't expecting any...

I read somewhere on these forums that a key bit of data is recorded elsewhere on the disc (an area which we cannot see in windows). it's possible that this area (if it exists) contains the file header or some other important bit of information... Rombusters, i think the toc is contained within an index file in the HMDHIFI folder... can't remember (and can't be bothered checking) but am pretty sure I saw it somewhere... lol, if someone made a "clone-md" software, that would be cool... wonder if it would have a sheep logo? ;-)

while true sp mode does not equal cd quality, I can't tell the difference and need more expensive equipment (headphones and system) to do so... even then, I doubt one can notice the difference without abxing

Unfortunately, there is no way that i know of which will allow you to transfer the songs quicker than realtime :-( Sony restricts every transfer (even analogue recordings may only be transfered once to a computer with a hi-md) My only advice is to back them up in real-time and make sure you back them up before transfering to the hi-md. Do not loose the backup because if you wish to make another copy, the same thing will happen.
-
hmmm, these mds are not in the hi-md format, am i right?
-
what bit rate are you using for the mp3's? is it variable?
-
whoa? that's even worse than (or equal to) telephone recordings (more like mobile phone recordings with bad reception!!!!) The IRiver would have been my choice as a hdd player, at least it can record at different bit-rates

and princo, turns green and peels if you leave them in the light or anywhere where it might be a little more humid than average.

I've had a problem with the transfer... a session recorded by a mic did not copy to the computer but for some reason still put protection on so I had to do a real-time transfer (not good if thats 12 sessions at 1 hr each) Problem being, the targeted people which sony places the protection for... do not really go for the mic do they? why in the world would they decide to put a 1 time limitation on analogue recordings... do they think us performing artists are going to sell our art on MD's? hang on a sec... hmmm... that's not a bad idea  harder to copy than cds... lol, apart from that, I can't find any other reason to "protect" mic recordings from the recorder... it removes a great deal of power from the recorder... a power I want to have. Also, when the files are locked, you can not split the tracks using the T-Mark feature, this also annoys me but not as much since I can edit the pc files (if they transfer sucessfully) Note: after SS2.2, I have not had an unsucessful transfer and hope I never will

Read part 9

it is not the first time sony has done something this stupid. Do you remember that protection "key 2 audio" or something like that? a protection that cost sony millions of dollars to develop and was "cracked" by a pen worth $0.99 read this for a laugh http://mixonline.com/news/audio_copyproof_..._cds_cracked_2/ sad thing is... it's true!

I'd imagine that more people on average would have a burner than a hi-md. While it is too slow for my taste to place any files over 15-30 mb, the convenience is there if I do decide I wish to use it. MD's are much more robust than cds and very handy at storing my homework so my MD's carry my music and uni assignments  a usb stick is a better alternative for this, but I tend to loose things. My MD though is required for most of the day as I am a music student. Having this extra feature added is primarily convenient. using it as a tool to backup 1gb of data... I don't think so. I do not want to wait approx 1 hour to backup 1gb of data.

What about unlimited transfer rights to analogue recordings trackmarking available on digital transfers a backlight and flac/mp3/ogg-vorbis support (I think I'm asking too much there but hey...)
-
Depends. * Ipod has much better software * no atrac protection * and mp3 support... * but I was repeled by the $100 fee to replace the battery (compared to my mznh700 which uses AA batteries) * the amount of play time is also shorter on the ipod (so batteries are more replacable - can carry spares and last longer as well!!!!) * I need it to record often for over 2 hrs at one sitting so IPod mini = worthless for me! also, having had worked in pc-warrenty dep for quite a while, I know how fragile hdds can be. A little bump can loose data also not to mention the fact that all hdd wear out much quicker than disc drives They are both good players and both are good quality. If you can get over the protection and accept the atrac3 format (a lot, i know) and finally accept the sonic stage software (difficult as it may seem) the NH1 (and any md for that matter) is actually a decent piece of hardware. line in means I can skip this completely. I don't mind listening to the music as I record it. In fact, I enjoy it... If I'm rushed, I've got the sonic-stage or simple-burner option. In terms of protection, I own the originals of all the music I backup. My only honest concern is that of live recordings being only able to transfer once to pc.

lol, I bought the hi-md for this very reason. I am also a musician (violinist) and wanted a quick/easy way to record rehearsals (quartets/trios/sonatas etc...) - havn't done much in terms of jazz but i love improvisation  The live recordings can be transfered to hdd and then converted to wav. Quite a few people have reported problems with the transfer (this has never been the case for me - I usually record in PCM mode, sometimes in Hi-SP on a normal disc). You can only transfer the file to computer once! do not loose this copy if you really want it otherwise you will have to transfer in real time. I was also worried about 1gb hi-md going to disappear, but i then realised I only need a few discs and a mic for my purposes cause i can reuse the discs many times over. A friend of mine has had his minidisc for live recording since 1996, he's only ever bought 2 discs and he's still using that same two discs! hope this helps. Cheers

Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread? [part III]
xeroxide replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
ahh, thanks. Can't believe i didn't see that. Need 2 get my eyes checked i guess, too much time looking at comp screens. It does things to you -

How can one tell if the mznh700 is the euro or other model (ie 3mw or 5mw)?
