  1. This can't go on I must inform the law Can this still be real or some crazy dream but I feel drawn towards the evil chanting hordes they seem to mesmerise me...can't avoid their eyes 666 the Number of the Beast 666 the one for you and me
  2. I think the problem is that my c.d player (now that I've checked it out) has no optical line out. It just says "out". Maybe that is the problem. I think you're wrong. S/PDIF is Satan talk.
  3. Here's what I did: I plugged the cable (Toslink) into the portable c.d player (out) and my MZ-S1. I set the synchro recording to "on" on the MZ-S1. I then played the c.d player and waited for recording to begin. The MD player gave me the "NoSig" message after a couple of seconds. I know I set the "R-MODE" to "SP" on my MD player. As for the S/PDIF, I'm not sure it applies to the c.d player or my MD player. The user manual doesn't mention it from what I can see. I'm not sure what the S/PDIF means. Pardon my noviceness here. After unplugging the cable on the MZ-S1, playback was fine. However, I did not try the cable using any other devices.
  4. Hello all. I have a question about the optical cable necessary to record to the MZ-S1. I just bought an optical cable from Radio Shack and when I tried it on my MZ-S1, it read: "No Signal". It wasn't detecting the cable (according to the user manual). So I returned the cable. Inside the user manual, there are specific model numbers for optical cables made by Sony under "optional accessories". Do I have to get a Sony optical cable for the MZ-S1? Does anyone else have experience with the MZ-S1 and which optical cable works? Thanks.
  5. Unobtanium?? I've never heard of that one. I heard that the NH1 is extremely solid but hard to find and expensive. I don't think the NH1 is even available around where I live. (in Canada). I would definitely be willing to put in some extra money if I knew materials were more reliable. Sorry to hear about your N-707...
  6. K.J, do you mean that most cd's are SCMS free or that the only SCMS free cd's are cd-r's. Sorry, I misunderstand. Also, I have done some titling using my MZ-S1 player but Sonicstage is better, it's true.
  7. Hello to all. My post is about product construction and durability. I'm reitirating the title. Nice. Anyway, I have an MZ-S1 a.k.a the sports clunker. I believe that thing could last me a very long time. The construction materials seem very solid to me. However, I have been looking at other models especially since Hi-MD came along. But I have to say, I'm skeptical about how durable the other models are. I've had a bad experience with my portable c.d player that I bought years ago for about 300 bucks at the time. Plastic parts on it cracked. That's a 300 dollar investment! And the thing cracked. So I'm looking at these other MD models skeptically. It seems like the casing on the MZ-S1 is toughest. Even though it has other limitations. Anyone have thoughts on this? I know that the RH-10 has an aluminum case. That seems pretty good. It's just sometimes I think these electronic devices are built so fragile. Why? They should make everything out of titanium. Even people. Or o.k, I'll settle for an Adamantium skeletal structure.
  8. Thank you for the help. It's good to hear that "Type-R" is high quality. Hey that's a cool pun.
  9. This reply is to K.J Palmer-I'm not sure if that is noted when I post so I'm mentioning it. Thank you for the help. Now I'm thinking it would be a good idea to get a CD/MD deck because I imagine recording is much easier. I wonder though, if the track labeling is done automatically with a deck? Is that even possible?
  10. First off, thank you for the help, I appreciate it. I'm glad to hear "Type-R" is in fact, high quality. About the automatic track marks and auto stop: You need to enable synchro-recording in order to work (see page 19 of the user manual) Yes I believe you're right, I'm not sure I had set the synchro recording. About the cable: Are you sure you're using an optical cable? I see no reason to gold plate such a cable. Well I think it's an optical cable however, I'm not sure about this. All I know is that the cable fits in the cd player and minidisc player and that really doesn't say anything about it being an optical cable!!! I'm going to go take a look at what one looks like at Radio Shack or something. By the way, sorry for gazing at your avatar for an extended time, but Natalie's just too beautiful for this world. ←
  11. I haven't been on this forum in a long while but I have still been using my MZ-S1 player and still love MiniDisc, thus...I post. O.k here's my post and I hope it fits in this area of the forums. I've been reading up on LP4 LP2 SP etc...Yesterday, I was looking at my MZ-S1 user manual. It told me that transfers from computer to my player can only give me LP2 or LP4 quality. (NOTE: I swear I had seen SP as an option in SimpleBurner a while ago). Until that point I've always recorded in LP2. However, I decided to try recording from a portable CD player to my MiniDisc player. I used a Panasonic portable cd player (don't know if the brand/model matters) and a gold plated optical cable (not an "optical plug" which the user manual said I could also use). I recorded 3 songs off of Filter's "Amalgamut" album. I chose that album because of the sound effects used in the songs and because I am a Filter fan (you can find these at your hardware store among other tools). Anyway, the recording was in real time and took a while. However, I've noticed a difference in sound quality from LP2. I am impressed. Oh by the way, my headphones are Senns (MX400). I should also note that when I recorded, I put 3 songs in the memory function on the cd player so it would only play those 3 songs. The thing is, there wasn't a pause long enough between the songs with that function so no track marks were made. They were all one big track. I had to put in the track marks later. I thought people should know that in case they use that function. My player also (for some reason) did not stop recording when the cd player stopped. The user manual said it would. Shame on it. Anyway, my user manual says that recording from the source the way I did using an optical cable, gives me something called "Type-R" sound. Apparently, this is closest to MiniDisc decks quality. How close is "Type-R" to SP? How good is the quality of my recording? That/those is my questions. And finally, I want to give a shout outs to all my brothers and sisters of the MiniDisc persuasion. Let's keep it alive in '05. Peace out.
  12. Thank You for all the help. I really appreciate it. About the website designer, I believe I'm referring to the main page (www.minidisc.org). However, I checked it out again and It's really not bad at all. I think it could use some tweaking that's all. I guess something to unify all the different sections (through use of color, font, etc...). It still seems to have a technical/scientific look to it. This may be what was intended anyway. :rasp: I'll follow all the steps you've mentioned. and thanks again for the assistance. I'm sorry for not replying sooner but I didn't get a notification of a posted reply in my e-mail.
  13. Thanks so much for your help. I appreciate it. I'm sorry I didn't say this sooner but I thought I'd get a notification of a response in my e-mail but I guess I didn't set that preference. Anyway, thanks again!
  14. First off, my apologies to the die hards/purists for coming in here with some novice questions. Second off, whoever runs this place is the greatest. This site is so detailed and comprehensive and you provide a ton of information that keeps the MiniDisc relevant and alive. You definitely deserve compensation because people who buy a MiniDisc product will undoubtedly be visiting this place. Sony and whoever else seem to have done very little to offer this kind of help and information. Basically: THANK YOU. Also, I'd suggest getting a web designer for your site. I am a Graphic Designer (I focus on printed material so this isn't a plug!). I think the site could benefit greatly from a stronger design (clarity of text in some areas, uniity of elements, a single font style). Just a reccommendation. O.k, my questions finally: I own a Sony MZ-S1 (the sports model) It came with the open MG and simple burner software. I'd like to know if any other software can do the song transfer (PC>MD) any faster. I'm clocking about a minute and a half per song. I find it a long time to wait when I want to put 50 or 60 songs on a disc. Also, I can transfer my songs to MD in LP2, LP4 or "Stereo". What's the best quality? and what is "Stereo"?. Is "Stereo" high quality? Does HI-MD have superior sound quality (than MD players like the MZ-S1)? Is there a carry case large enough for the clunky MZ-S1? I bought a MD carry case but it's too small. It's made for the other players. Thanks for your patience and help...
