I'm looking to streamline the process of making minidiscs and waiting for ss to convert the mp3 into omg takes a large amount of time. I was wondering if there is any software that can convert all my mp3's into omg so i dont have to deal with it while making the disc, converting overnight would work. i think i remember seeing a program like that awhile ago but i've searched alot for it and havent found it so im just flat out asking. just wondering, how much space would it take up? i have about 1500 mp3's most of which are only 128kb compression (which comes to 5 or so gigs i think, not at my computer so dont exactly remember, hell could b anywhere from 3 to 7) and i convert them to actrac3plus64k (or whatever its called, i listen mostly in pretty crowded areas and i am pretty familiar with quality so i dont need any of ya trying to convert me =P). so im just wondering how much space would the omg duplicate collection would take up thanks in advance for your help, ~phox

My nh1 finaly has arrived, and i am very pleased with my choice. It feels increadibly sturdy and its just so damn sleek. I'm sure u've all seen the pictures so im not gunna go into the whole "omg its entire body construction is solid magnesium!" bit. But this thing just feels so great in your hand. and now to the part that i want to share with the rest of you -> I got it for only 290 (including shipping) using pricegrabber.com which pointed me to http://www.compuplus.com/insidepage.php3?s...ck=searchViewed. And i must say this pricegrabber.com is a god send. i typed in afew things that i wanted and found things for a fraction of the original price. the mdr-ex71 earphones (regularly 50) i found for like 30 and the nh1 (regularly 400) i found for 290. so thats $320 for $450 worth! not half bad if ya ask me. (just checked, seems like compuplus upped the nh1 10 bucks to 300) all in all, just wanted you guys to know that the nh1 is everything u wanted it to be and a bag of chips, and that i found a great tool to saving some major cash even while upgrading ur selection. hope ya guys find this helpful, ~phox

i'm petty interested in the mz-nh1 (something ya already know if ya saw my other post), but im looking to use my player without the remote, and i was just curious as to the capabilities of the nh1 without the remote. what exactly can you do? what can you not do that you could with most other hi-md player or a remote? what exactly are all the buttons on the player itself (play, stop, ect, ect)? overall, think i could live without being stuck to the remote? again, thanks, you guys have been a real help, ~phox

Okay, i've finally done it, i've decided on the Minidisc over the iPod, and im not looking back and now all i have left to decide is which minidisc to purchase. I want something that feels solid and sturdy, so im looking for an all metal construction (but i supposed i could settle for a metal front as alot of you said the mzh900 feels very sturdy). Also, this is something that is high on my list, i want it to be minimalistic/sleek. so that is why i'm definetly leaning towards the mznh1. and just recently i found, on audiocubes, MZ-NH1 Type-S and MZ-NH3D Type-S. Does anyone know what the type-s refers to? also, i really dont like how these units loose half of thier funtionality when you dont have the remote, and i would like to get rid of the middleman (remote) as im going for the whole simplistic/minimalistic approach, and this is why the nh900 is still in the run. so, what im basicly asking for, what are you guys's opinions on these models? all you nh900 users, does it feel solid and does it look any better in person? what is ther difference between the mzh1 and the mznh1 type-s (besides 50 bucks)? Anything else i should know about in weighing my decision? thanks again in advance, ~phox

getting back on subject... yes, definetly, go for it, just get something out that gets the job done, nothing fancy, and when you get the basic one out (all it needs to do is get a list on file names or something, dont need the bitrate or anything else), and after you get the basic one out, then you can work on more advanced features. but getting a simple one out like that that gets the job done i think will be a HUGE benfit to the community. I myself will bake you a batch of cookies would be cool if you could make one for the data stored to mayb, even though u could just open it through the explorer, i just personally like the idead of lists. but, summary of the post, get something out with all the things you can have it easily do, and when u get that out to the community, start work on something more advanced, and there is a batch of cookies in it for you good work m8, ~phox

this is just my personal reasoning, and may not convince ya otherwise. physically, i find minidiscs a much better option than discs. They are smaller, are much more rugged, dont have to worry about how you treat them as much, and dont need a case, as in you can throw them where ever. This seriosuly decreases the hassle and stress factor for me when it comes to handeling and treating it. Also, my burner burns onto cd-rw's pretty slow and sometimes has trouble reading large (hundreds of megs) files without it just crapping out. i mean, that's pretty much it for me, still burn a few things to cd's, like large file backups, and put thos in a case somewhere safe somewhere. but like storing video clips, music, pictures, i put into mindisc's. I'd rather have a few minidiscs laying around onto of my monitors and coffee tables and such than fragile cd's. It just works for me

I know this isn't the first time you've herd this and i'm sure it wont be the last, but i just have to vent. WHY does sony feel the need to completely and udderly strangle the Minidisc technology. We all know that minidiscs can become a serious competetor with the iPod if not blow it out of the water What does Sony hope to achieve by putting all these restrictions on the technology? (atrac, SS, restrictions on file movement, etc., etc.) Do they think they'll stop piratism or something? anyone with one hundreth of an once of logic would know that if someone wanted to move music, they would burn it to a disc, why the HELL would they fumble with minidiscs?? If the directors of whatever department is in charge of minidisc development took 5 minutes to look at the technology and make some simple changes, minidiscs would dominate and become a serious force in the portable media world. It could defiently set a new standard and would rival the iPod in sales. I just find it entirly frusterating in how Sony is handeling the technology. It completely bogels the mind to try to understand thier reasoning behind all of this. I'm sry for the post because i know you've herd it all before, but i just wanted to put it in one place and had to vent. If u got beef with how sony is treating the technology and imagine a better world with a few small changes, please, feel free to post, i know i feel better thanks for letting me cool off ~phox

My max budget is around 500 or so, but my budget is more based on getting the one unit that is right for me, may it be the most expensive iPod or the cheapest Hi-Md unit, and not so much the "i have $300 and i want to be able to do this, this, and this, what can get the most bang for my buck" scenario I doubt that i will ever have the need to live record, when i am away from my computer i want to be able to listen to my music, alot of it, and that's pretty much it, and like i said earlier, playlist capability would make that more enjoyable, but in the end it's not entirely neccesary and wont kill the deal for me for Hi-Md while the topic is up, how can you listen to your music with md's besides by artist and by album? for example, can you import playlists or maybe move the files to and from folders on the md on the fly with hi-md? and can it show you the entire music contents of the md and scroll through/play from there? thanks again for all you guys' help ~phox

yup, it basicly comes down to that, have been really pondering that fundimental comparison lately, and also trying just to 'feel out' which one i would feel more satisfied with, imagining that i bought an ipod and regretting not getting a hi-md, and vice-versa, and seeing which one seems more realistic, oh, and anothering thing that has also become a varible is playlist. ipod has alot of capability of creating playlist on the fly where the md seems very limited on the use of playlists. that, and the possibility of having my entire (6 gig) music collection with me at once, of course, i could get a hefty portion of that with md's still semi-divided thanks ~phox

I've been debating between HI-MD and the I-Pod line for a little while now, and have ultimatly decided on the Hi-Md series, but i was displeased to see the sony is continuing to be idealistic in thinking they can stop piracy with all these restrictions, but anyways, this is my situation; i use two computers, one for music, and one for everything else (games, work and such). now i will probably only use music from my music computer and wont have the need to transfer music from my MD to another computer, only my MD and music computer will be sharing music, and i have no problem using atrac or whatever sony forces me to use, as long as i dont run into any problems listening to my music when and where i want and the transfer is seemless and no other noticable obsticles now what really sold me to the Hi-Md line was the ability to use my Md's for data storage. i want to be able to put a few movieclips or files or whatever, label it funny movies or something along those lines, and just be able to store it, and i have come to terms with the slow uploadspeed of about half a meg per second, 10 min for an entire 300meg standard disc isnt THAT bad, i've zoned out for longer than that that basicly sums up how i will use my hi-md, i dont think there are any noticeable obsticles keeping me from using my hi-md from how i want, but i just want to be sure, so if there is ANYTHING you think i should be warned about before shelling out a few hundred bucks for somthing that already seems like a questionable invetment, like if it takes hours for me to put a few dozen songs from my music comp on my md even if i cooperate with sony's ways, please, let me know thanks in advance ~phox
