Damn! My intention has been to buy RH10. Now I don't know. My girlfriend told me to better buy HDD or flash player, but what the hell! I want to do recording (in reasonable quality, so no crappy mp3) and playback with one device. Really, no other choice than Hi-MD. Creative JukeBox 3 is way too big for me, flash players don't have enough capacity or are just recorders not a real players (M-Audio MicroTrack, Edirol R1 - both pretty expensive btw.). Hi-MD = cheapest solution for me + removable media. Oh my....
-
Hmm... RH10 and RH910 seem like good candidates. Backlit display on the RH10 only, AA batts usable with both of them, no FM tuner. Great.

I don't think so. Hi-MD doesn't use the dvd laser. As for 3rd gen, support of flac would be oh so great! However, recording in flac would be probably impossible. But Sony would develop own lossless compression codec, which would allow recording... mmm... And don't compare flac with zip or rar. Lossless audio compression is based on entirely different algorithms. It's like comparing jpeg and mp3.

It isn't canceled. It depends on the input impedance of the device. Line-in has higher input impedance so if the roll-off capacitor values are calculated for the MD mic-in (which is 10kOhms (?)) and you connect the roll-off to the line-in (20kOhms (?)) the roll-off requency halves. If it's calculated for the DAT mic-in (4.7kOhms) and you use it with the DAT line-in (47kOhms) the roll-off frequency is 10 times lower. Hope it's clear.

Damn. Of course, you're absolutely right, I was too lazy to calculate
-
Very easy: 1 / ( 2 * pi * C * Z ) = f (in Hz) so that C = 1 / ( 2 * pi * f * Z ) Z in Ohms, f in Hertz, C in Farads... You choose the frequency, check the manual for your device's line-in impedance and off you go. schematics The resistors are usually 10kOhms

It doesn't say much without.. eh.. volume range (?), you know what I mean? You don't know whether the 20Hz is at -3dB or at -20dB... Damn, I can't speak English
-
Simple bass roll-off is only capacitor in series with the mic and input, which works like a 6dB per octave low-pass. The frequency of roll-off (capacitor value) is calculated against fixed input impedance, which has to match the input impedance of your device providing you want it to work properly. The higher freq of roll-off you use, the lower bottom end is present in the recording. It won't raise the volume of mid- and high-range. My two cents. Correct me if I'm wrong. Eeh, every 3dB doubles the volume, right?

I'd say JB3 has mic-in.. But I personally vote for MD. + way smaller size, you can use AA batteries to power the unit, removable media - only 90 min (wav) capacity (which is enough for me, however)

Jeddeth, nice collection of MDs I have a little question considering the RH910... Is it possible to run it on AA batteries?? Thanks

Well, I'm thinking about purchasing a device for recording concerts and playback purposes. I've finally decided for Hi-MD over Creative NJB3, becuse it's smaller, it can run on AA batts and it works with removable media. I'm gonna buy Sound Proffesionals' mics. Either CMC-4 or CMC-2A (with DIY batt box). The last thing I need to do, is to choose a model. I'm quite impressed by the 2nd gen, but I didn't find whether it has some features I demand. I don't want the NH1 (which is 1st gen, though) 'cause it's too expensive. So, RH10, RH910 or RH710?? I want these: i) backlit display (either on remote or on the body) ii) remote is not essential iii) AA batteries functionality (either internal or external) iv) no FM tuner I hope that's all. Thanks for your thoughts and advice, K
