I've seen a band here in the UK that use MD backing tracks (I think its a S40 deck) - www.susanacid.com They did have a problem when they played at the Hope and Anchor that the stage was so bouncy the deck was skipping, but generally there didn't seem to be any quality problems. Probably easier to use a deck with a remote to control the player.
