  1. SS 3.4 reinstalled. No difference. My single Hi-MD disk works fine; all the plain old mds are toast. The 600D won't read long enough to let SS or MDSB see it. As soon as the 600D starts reading, it encounters a Read Error. Looks like they all might be toast. I've tried to format them in a standard MD player at a radio station, but no luck. javajeb
  2. I'm going to try the reinstall of SS. Can't hurt, but I have my doubts. Once one of the discs go in, the 600D will not read them so SS or SMDB never sees them either. But we'll see what a new SS3.4 will do. javajeb
  3. Recently, I've solicited the aid of fellows on the forum regarding flaky access to my MDs. I use a 600D for ripping CDs, etc and have recently had ALL my standard MDs error out. 10 for 10. None work, and as of now, I can't erase them. For reference, see 600D Errors and Can't Erase Disks Now, I was thinking of nabbing a used 800 or NH1, but I'm really questioning that decision. I can't imaging 2 5-packs of media would all turn out bad. Is there an issue with the player, possibly? Suggestions before pitching? Thanks javajeb
  4. That's what I was thinking. I didn't know if I would be hosed from recording without the display. But if it'll work, voice is forgiving when recorded with ample gain. BTW, AGC = ??? Thanks, javajeb
  5. After reading this entry in the Entered the NH900 Twilight Zone? thread, I wanted to pose this question. I've been emailing a member about an RH10 with a dead display. My goal is to have a second player, and an occasional recorder for when I am speaking (usually Sunday School or preaching). So, would sub$100 be reasonable in this situation? Thanks, javajeb
  6. I've considered that possibility. But if that's the case, almost all the standard MDs I have are bad. Which seems odd...
  7. Recently, Dex Otaku and I went back and forth trying to erase media my MZNH600D stated bad with a "Read Error". Never could erase the media, even on a local radio station's MD player/recorder. Played a bit over the weekend, moving something off of a disk I was able to get Sonic Stage to read. Copied some stuff down. Here's what's been happening: I'll get a Read Error on a disk. For example, before lunch, I was listening while working. Stopped the MD while I was away. Turned it back on once at the desk and BAM - Read Error. I popped the MD out several times and in. What seems to do the trick is flipping the write protect tab back and forth. Before lunch, it was closed. I reopened it after lunch, reinserted, popped it out, closed it and reinserted. All good. Any ideas as to why I'm having to dance to listen? javajeb
  8. Thanks for the tips. I've tried the power reset - NADA. I'm going to try formatting in a original MD recorder someone I know has. UPDATE: tried the formatting in a Sony ATRAC/ATRAC3 recorder in a radio station. The MD recorder read the disc, saw two tracks, but both were protected. It would neither erase a track individually, nor all. It looked as if track 1 was about 4 seconds, track 2 323 minutes. As for why/how these have failed, I don't know. The only one I have labeled as having musice did go on a trip last fall, but I seriously doubt anything happened with my carryon to cause a problem. All discs have lived in the 5 pack case they came in. Looks like they may be in for the scrap heap. Mystery... thanks, javajeb
  9. Yep, and it's on. The only quick difference is that the useful menu option is lost with simple. It contains the following: search which doesn't work with disks reporting a read error. And, as a side note, I have three of ten original MD disks erroring out now. Thanks for the help dex. javajeb
  10. I wonder if this is the case with a straight, non-downloader-only MD unit? Mine is a 600D, and my menu options, with Advanced turned on, are as follows: Display SubPMode Sound Useful Option I've dug through each of these, but I don't find anything related to formatting. Am I missing something? Thanks again, javajeb
  11. Thanks dex. That should do it. I'll give her a whirl this evening. It's just a disc or two that it doesn't recognize; the unit seems fine, at least for now. javajeb
  12. I've been digging through the forums in relation to Read Errors I've received on two discs thus far. I can recollect the data on the discs, so recovery isn't a big deal. I simply want to format them. One thread I've found is this one. I upgraded to SS3.4 yesterday, but can't format the disc because SS doesn't see a disc present. Simple Burner doesn't see a disk present for formatting either. That said, does anyone know if I could safely use the Service Mode steps to initialize the disks outlined above on a 600D? I've gotten in to service mode, but don't know what to do. Thanks, javajeb
  13. I've relocated this to the HIMD forum. Thanks, javajeb
  14. Looks like, at least with amazon, that the 9x0 will be the most likely candidate. I found one NH800 for $250. A 910 new is $199/$183 used. No 700/800's there. I may lurk ebay for a while to see what they're going for. thanks. I missed the prefixed "D" with the 710. javajeb
  15. Volta, To probe the depths of your experience and knowledge related to MD, I've been digging around based on your earlier recommendations. I've seen the Argos thread on Hi-MD today, so here's what I've found for US prices. Seeking opinions on what would be the best bang for the buck: MZ-NH910: $199.99 MZ-NH900: $220.41 - used MZ-DH710: $149.99/$137.78 used They all, according to the specs, seem to match up with my desired use. Out of personal experience/proxy experience, which would be the best one? All fit my target budget with the NH900 being a bit high, but in there. Thanks, javajeb
  16. Thanks Volta. As I will be diging around, what mics would you recommend for an interview style environment? I used to stuff in the pro audio realm so I'm not sure what will interface. Thanks again, javajeb
  17. I do a bit of genealogy in my spare time. Many of my forbears are now gone and much culture and history is passing with them. So, with those that are left, I want to start recording stories, etc. I recently acquired a MZ-NH600D, which I enjoy. My question is this: what Hi-MD recorder would be best for interview style, oral history recordings? Something that won't break the bank would be best. For context, I have recorded hours and hours of spoken word in the past on Marantz portable cassette decks that were excellent. But now, I want something I could dump to my PC and preserve in other formats, etc. Suggestions? Thanks, javajeb
  18. I would be interested. I'm waiting on my 600D to arrive. Should be here tomorrow. Line in is not a make or break for me, but would be cool! javajeb
