Ok so I tried the SS german thing, it didn't work. I tried SFC, but I don't have my original XP CDs handy (like I said I just moved and they've gotta be hidden somewhere in some box) so it didn't do anything. I will try to uninstall and re-install SP2 (fortunately I've got that on CD), and then I'll have to format I guess. I still need to find my original CDs though.

Thanks, I didn't know that command, I will try it out and report back.

Yeah I came to the same conclusion, but if I can't get it to work on mine it's not that big of a deal since I can rip my CDs at work. I could reinstall Windows on my C: partition which only includes Windows and my Program Files but I don't have the patience to do it right now. I guess it's gonna be the only solution...

No I don't have a car (I live downtown Paris and only use the subway)...

Thanks, I've seen that solution but haven't tried it yet. I will report back if it works or not. Concerning my USB settings: everything is fine on this end, it's the first time I've had a problem to get Windows to recognize any USB device. About my internet connection: I'm not offline voluntarily, I just moved and my lame ISP takes forever to create my new DSL line...since I've got a desktop I can't really carry it to a friend's house or something . Plus, because of XP activation issues (when you're using legit versions of XP), I can't even plug my HD into another computer because it'll see it's not the same hardware config.

When I said I didn't insert the CD, I was talking about the other computers. On mine I tried the following: "bare install" (no CD, thinking it would be recognized automatically like on the other computers), "normal install" (from the CD bundled with the player) and the SS 3.1 install. None of them worked. Of course I did clean install/ uninstall every time.

Sorry but the drivers mentioned in the thread do not work with my player, the files needed seem to be embedded in Windows. Like I said several times, I'm guessing I need a certain Windows update or something, maybe a DLL or an INF file. (without talking about SS or any PA driver install) - The player is recognized by a Windows XP SP2 computer - It's recognized by a Windows XP SP1 computer - It's not recognized by my Windows XP SP2 computer The plethora of drivers I downloaded didn't change anything. I know the player is working and can be recognized by Windows, I just don't know why it's not working on my computer. Btw, I said I'm still looking for that specific E407 driver because it doesn't seem to be included in SS, 3.0 or 3.1 (I didn't even insert the CD and Windows recognized the player on the other computers) and it's not supported by the PA driver mentioned in the thread: "This driver is supporting the following products: All Sony Hi-MD devices All Sony NetMD devices All Sony ATRAC HDD devices Sony Network Walkman models: NW-MS9 / NW-MS11 (Windows 98 SE driver is not included) NW-MS70D / NW-MS90D / NW-MS77DR NW-E55 / NW-E75 NW-E99 Sony IC recorders models: ICD-MS515 ICD-MS525"

Still not working. I tried on my work computer: Windows XP SP1. It worked like a charm, just like on my sister's computer. Like the first time, I didn't not even insert the SS CD into the drive, XP recognized the player automatically as a removable drive and when I installed SS it worked great. It kinda sucks that I can't use it on my home computer but it's not that bad if I can at least transfer CDs at work. I'm guessing I'm missing some kind of Windows update or driver or something. I know it's not a SP issue, and it doesn't come from the player. I don't have the internet at home so I can't do any Windows update right now. If only I could find that driver.

I will try those, but I'm kinda starting to giving up hope it'll work on my computer...

Still not working with 3.1 from a clean uninstall and install. When I plug the player, it's still not recognized by Windows or SS. It asks me for a driver. Is there a special Windows update to get this driver? I searched Google for it but couldn't find anything... Where's the driver for that player?
-
I mean it was recognized directly by Windows as a removable storage device. I then had to install SS to transfer music to the player. (I've read somewhere on this board that a MP3 file manager is due soon for this player so I won't need SS anymore).

Thanks I will try that. Hopefully that will fix it. Thanks. Low Volta, I know how forums work, if I posted here it's because I tried several things (including the clean install you suggested) and none of them worked. I thought some people could help me out. I've been searching for a couple of days so please don't assume things when you don't know me. I did search on this board and already found the threads you gave me but none of them really applied to my case. Sorry if I'm bothering you or the mods by posting in the wrong section. I thought a driver/ Windows related problem would go in the Technical section, sorry about that. FYI, I didn't even need to install SS on the other computer, I just plugged the player and it worked. I will post back if I solve my problem so maybe that could help some people.

Actually it's not really a software question, but more a hardware/ OS question, since it's not recognized by my computer/ Windows XP SP2 and I'm missing the right driver. SS is working fine, it's just that the computer doesn't have the right driver for my player and I can't find it on the internet...

Hi all, I just bought a NW E407 player. I first tried it out on my Windows XP SP1 computer. SonicStage installed great but the computer did not recognize the player. I used the CD to install SS and the driver but Windows said the driver was "invalid" (something missing in the INF file). I then tried the player on my sister's comp, which is a XP SP2 and it worked great, I didn't even need to install the drivers, XP recognized the player as soon as I plugged it in. I came back home, upgraded to SP2 (using the file on microsoft.com), rebooted, uninstalled everything I installed before, plugged the player back in and...it was still not recognized!!? What can I do to solve my problem? Apparently SP2 wasn't the problem, I tried to search Google for the driver but had no luck... I'm guessing there must be a valid driver somewhere but I can't find it. Please help! Thanks. Complete specs: Sony Vaio desktop computer, Pentium 4 @ 2.4GHz, 1GB DDR Ram, 320GB HD, Windows XP SP2.
