  1. I have a Sony minidisc recorder MZ-RH1. I need a charger for the recorder -- the one that connects to the 120 v. AC power line. Is there a place to buy same? In searching, it seems that Sony has abandoned the minidisc format, including accessories. I am uncertain whether any USB cable can charge to unit, or a special cable is needed. Some of my USB cables seem to charge from the USB port of my computer, some do not.

I have a Sony MZ-RH1 minidisc recorder. My local public library subscribes to Netlibrary, a free option to download eAudiobooks to listen to. The Nelibrary is explained at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/dbsRe...pany/netlib.htm and as far as I can understand the audio books arrives as a WMA file. The web site says that an mp3 player is needed to access the audiobooks, but iPod and Zune are not acceptable. A list of requirements for an mp3 player are shown at a different web site: http://support.oclc.org/resolutions/testedplayers.pdf There is a way of testing to see if an mp3 player satisfies the requirements listed on the latter site. Can anyone advise me whether the Sony MZ-RH1 recorder can play these downloads? If so, what needs to be done to transfer the Netlibrary WMA file from computer to minidisc recorder?
  3. I have a new Sony MZ-RH1 recorder with SonicStage version 3.4.03.15140 connected to PC (Windows XP) via USB 2.0 port. Recently I tried to transfer a folder (group) from the minidisc recorder -- that folder was recorded on the Hi-MD disc from an original source -- to my PC. WAV conversion was selected for the transfer. The transfer began, then stopped. The folder had been deleted from the minidisc disk, and no file was created on the PC. I think somehow the transfer process deleted the folder. Is this behavior common? Will I be protected from loss if before transferring from minidisc to PC, the write-protect tab is set? Can it happen in reverse (i.e., the file or folder on the computer is deleted when transferring to minidisc)? A piece of info: the folder on the minidisc had several tracks, each track recorded with a different compression, starting with a PCM track. Does this make any difference?
  4. My Sony minidisc recorder MZ-R55 is becoming cranky, and I'm looking for a replacement. I almost exclusively use the minidisc to record "live" music from a large stereo microphone setup, later separate the recording into tracks on the MD, then transfer to my computer for further editing. In the end I will burn about 5 to 50 CDs of the music on my computer. The main disadvantage of my old recorder is the need to transfer from recorder to computer in real time. Limited battery life and limited recording (80 minutes) is a problem occasionally, as is the difficulty of keeping a fixed recording volume level. Advantages of the old recorder is the alkaline battery attachment and the lighted remote attachment. The LCD screen, tho small, is helpful and the bass boost for playback helps to compensate for the headphones. Given my use, what is the ideal minidisc recorder for me? Best recorded sound quality, digital transfer to computer, and ability to make CDs without copy protection are most important; the other important things may be inferred from the third paragraph. BTW, I have already read several threads on this forum about the MZ-RH1 vs. other models but none of these specifically address live recording and computer transfer.
  5. I have an older Sony portable minidisc recorder, about 6 years old, that can record up to 80 minutes only. Recently I bought some Sony minidiscs at Circuit City described as "Premium Gold -- 80 min -- compatible with Hi-MD." When I insert one of these into my minidisc recorder, a loud racket is heard followed by the recorder message "Disk Error." Taking the minidisc out of the recorder, I see that the circular disk is broken cleanly from side to side into two pieces. This is repeatable for a new disk. Examining the Sony disk, the portion of the disc inside the dime-sized window on the reverse side is shaped differently. The Sony disks all have a center hole about 1/10", a larger dime-sized circular ring, and two sharp points at about 90 degrees to each other that joins the dime-sized circular ring. All other minidiscs that I have used before do not have the sharp points. To test the recorder, I found an old unopened minidisc that dates back perhaps five years. Inserting it into the recorder, it registered quickly with no unusual noise. I can also play recorded minidiscs with no problem. Has the specification of the minidisc changed recently? If so, where can I get the older-style minidiscs that don't break into when inserted in the recorder?
