I had a similar problem... My MZ-NH700 won't play any kind of MD neither normal nor Hi-MDs so i sent it to AVC (Sony Support Germany) and 2 weeks later i got it back ,still not fixed ( i suppose they just cleaned the lense) , and now i'm waiting since 6 weeks for a new one...
