  1. Its interesting coming back here and looking at what everyone else has done. Probably the best place to ask this. I ripped my old mic right chanel cord, and have a few capsules still around so I was going to build a new set. I've talked with others that said an "ok" way to get two pairs is to measure the resistance over the leads and get ones that are about equal. Not very precise, but a lot quicker than other ways. I've never made a set that was exactly equal.... So, my question is about the capsules. Years ago they recommended a metal housing to surround the mic capsule. I used a small brass tube at the time, and it was easy for me to cut up some alligator clips and solder them on to the brass. I noticed greenmachine didn't use any metal, just heat shrink tubing. I think they recommended metal to fill out the sound somehow, but wasn't sure. Does anyone have any experience with this or recommendations? I believe mine are the common panasonic caps. I'm not sure if I'll try the modification or not, any comments? thanks all.
  2. I finally got my RH1, and got it uploading some legacy SP recordings from several years back. I've only done one or two discs so far, but its so much quicker... However, my third or fourth disc has two longer tracks of 25+ minutes that seem to make the uploading stop. It doesn't seem as if it should take quite that long.. anyone know why? are longer tracks supposed to take so much longer than several smaller tracks of the same time? it keeps saying "transfering" but the time remaining keeps getting bigger and bigger. On the Rh1, "ACCESS" keeps blinking. Trying to transfer SP to PCM... The only thing I'm thinking is that perhaps I have a bad disc, or there is some dust or something under the cover. I havne't tried taking the disc and seeing if it plays those parts yet or not, but thought I'd ask here first. I'm using sonic stage 4.0 (sonic stage 3.4 wouldn't recognize the standard MD discs) on an XP pro machine. Also, I really need to get rid of my rh10 now, check my for sale thread. thanks, orange
  3. thanks for the pm, no problem. Never said thanks for point out the review either. I've been waiting for this for a while, as have most i assume. Hope someone can pull away from their's long enough to shed some light. take care
  4. yeahs, thats the review I was talking about. I was looking to get some realworld experience before plunking down the money. Plus, no one seems to want my rh10 either...
  5. I've read one or two reviews a while back, but was wondering if anyone had any idea on how long it does actually take to get a normal MD recording uploaded into SS with the RH1? Also, any speed increase with pcm uploading (originally from linein with mics)? I ask because it seems to take forever to upload and convert to .wav. No other devices on usb to slow it down. I just expected it to be faster. I thought I heard the number of around 10x realtime for SP uploading, but does this include the startup and conversion as well? For instance, would it really only take 5 minutes to get a 50minute recording uploaded and transfered to wav format? or would it be more to do all that? I have probably 60 or 80 standard MDs that I would like to backup and have better access to but I'm a little leary of the time it will take to do it all. thanks,
  6. I'm looking to upgrade to the RH1 only because I need to transfer some older standard minidiscs to the PC. I've recorded about 5 or 10 concerts with this, used it for a few more hours while walking, but mostly its been sitting in my dresser out of action. I mainly got it as a recording device. Shouldn't have to talk much about it here, but ask away if you have questions. Its the standard black American version with the OLED blue display (why didn't they do backlighting 10 years ago for live recording!!!). I'm not sure what to sell it for, and would really rather not deal with ebay. I also have some MD cases for sale I no longer need. There are various ones available, some clamshell and some slide in designs. Sony, maxell, memorex, lots of different colors and styles. any interest? I have heatware references and ebay as well. my email is orangezeroalpha at gmail for questions, live in illinois and would love to not have to ship if possible. thanks for looking. orange. <SOLD>
  7. yeah, this is all great and all, but i still have tons of standard "old school" minidiscs of personal recordings and i still have to spend 74 minutes uploading, instead of the 5minutes it should take. its just plain silly. You would think sony would realize that if they did allow this seemingly easy option, a lot of people that have stayed away from himd would reconsider. old md users are more likely to use himd than the normal population, don't ya think? how hard would it really be to do. i can't believe someone hasn't ever cracked or hacked the software to allow these things to happen. aren't there any geeks that do md anymore?? i mean, besides me. nobody but me would ever want to listen to my recordings anyway...
  8. I would guess that would be true, but never had the time to do all that. with my new battery box (which could affect things also), my recordings are about 1.2 to 1.4 dB off most of the time between the two mics. I have been experimenting in soundforge to come up with the best way to equalize these. I have been mostly just normalizing each channel separetly based on the peak dB. if i use the average i have a hard time without going overboard. i guess i should put this in a new thread. any good websites for how live music should sound? i assume its mostly the ear of the beholder. outdoor show was way too bass-y but the indoor one turned out real good, (despite my heavy drinking) take care,
  9. As far as matching the caps, to do a quick test to see which are going to be similar you might try measuring the resistance over the two connections. get ones that are close together in their readings.. i think the guy from core sound told me that is a "decent" way to get similar caps if you have no other way to test them. the other way, with test signals, would be better i think, but time consuming. good luck
  10. i assume you've done all these things, but here goes: check that it is importing the songs in .wav format, straight pcm and not encoding them to atrac. try out some other speakers or headphones on the computer, or burn to cd and play in your stereo just a few things to check.
  11. i'd put in a vote for the rh10. the oled comes in read handy in the dark... plus, from what i found, the rh10 is probably cheaper than the 900. only big disadvantage is that you can't record standard minidisc atrac with the 2nd gen (rh10). i believe you still can in sonicstage, just not when using line or mic in. might want to double check if that's important to you. having done one recording and uploading, it is much faster and the quality should be better as well. hope that helps some.
  12. yeah, they always like a copy, after they are done laughing. i'm the one with all the wires and parts running across my body and hidden in my clothes at shows and bars. anything to make me less mechanical is a blessing. i think, despite all the irritating things, this rh10 will be about the best recorder yet. too bad they can't make a decent line-in recorder with levels and a memory card for storage. simple usb attachment and recognized as a disc drive in windows. (oh, and thats under what i paid for my rh10, forgot about the microtrack and others) i'll stop getting off topic.
  13. Ok, added two more pics of the finished product. i'm not usually too rough on my stuff, think it should be okay now. the cord is wraped around inside a little bit and stuck on my quite a bit of that jb weld. its small enough now that i could build another with a slight roll off and take it with as well and it would still be less stuff to carry. thanks again guys, (gm especially)
  14. i'll have to check that out, i just thought the date was odd. so, after messing around with it tonight, i noticed it makes a decent amount of noise when seeking. is that normal?? not so much for spinning, but more when the optical head slides down from the inside to out, or out to in. i dont remember it being this loud before with my sharps, but is this genrally acceptable for sonys. i know its a hard question to quantify, but thought i'd ask anyway. also, i've heard conflicting things about quick mode. keep it on for recording or turn it off. i usually just keep the batter out of it until i get to the show, to avoid drainage of the battery, no matter how slight. thanks again guys.
  15. no, i actually added two more layers of jb weld to it (the grey stuff). it looks like a huge wad of dried gum with a hole, a 9v and a wire sticking out of. i'll try an add a finished one later. my friend was over tonight and he was laughing at it. i'll probably end up taping the cord to the 9v as well, i have it curved down the bottom of it now. just to be safer thanks,
  16. thanks for the help guys, geez. what did i just buy into??? i understand why they are still the only company making these now. is it impossible to upgrade the firmware on these things? i assume so, just because its not making them anymore money. too bad, with my archos i was able to add a new firmware into the rom so that it loaded superfast instead of taking 25 seconds. i suppose you are right though, don't suspect it will matter much at a rock concert. like i've said before, i wouldn't be surprised if i don't even use audio/video technology with all the stranglehold they will have on the devices (hd dvd, blu ray, hdmi, etc.) i'm being paranoid i know but the transition will be bumpy and time comsuming. anyway, i did ad some extra pics of my battery box in the recording sticky at top if anyone is interested. and some in the gallery too. one more question, when i upload, it says my recordings were released in 1899. how do i change this? in the recorder? ok rant mode off.
  17. darn, i was hoping someone would have figured out a way to upload standard MD by now. i've always been fond of mindisc, but it is frustrating to say the least. i took away the group recording and it still records a 15 recording session as tons of individual tracks, why is that and how do i avoid? thanks for the quick reply also.
  18. Ok, finally got my recorder today in the mail. built my new mic battery box last night (thanks, greenmachine, for the help. I'll update with pics soon). So, i'm a little new to all this sony recoring. Anyone care to shed some light on things to avoid and or be sure to do while recording. Little background, i started off with a japanese sharp s701 silver, then got an 821. from there i went to an archos hd recorder, mainly out of laziness. quality not nearly as good. finally felt like sony got its act together a bit. so, i have an rh10. i was wondering specifically about actual battery life while recording pcm (and/or hisp) with the nihm and also with the AA attachment. I assume keeping the screen on is a big battery drain, but any specifics?? here will be my setup in the next few days. panasonic unmodded caps ==>battery box with 10kohm resistor % 0.33uF caps ===> line in on rh10 @pcm i have done a similar setup probably over 100 times in the past and know the basics, i basically asking about differences between modern sony recorders and older sharp recorders. if that makes sense. i had planned on setting the t.mark to every 10minutes, is this a good idea? i'd rather loose 10minutes rather than a whole 90 min show if something happens in transfer. or should i go 5min? for a while it was recording about 1min segments but i guess it was on group record. dont care for that much, dont want 100+tracks for my one concert, ha. ok, anyone read this before tomorrow and have an idea on settings and such. i wish sony had a way to remember to keep it at manual recording level, and also to remember the recoring level. how hard could that be. while i'm here, what is the difficulty technologically with transfering a regular old md into my computer with my rh10? is it just a copyright thing? i have tons of older concerts, and personal recordings. it would be so much less time consuming to transfer this way. i've thought of using my himd as a passthrough, recording to pcm and then uploading to md that way. wouldnt' that be better than using an older md deck with optical out into a pc card that has optical in (its not bit to bit perfect). ok, i'm done rambling, i shoudl have some pics of my mics and battery box up soon, need to convert them down a bit. thanks for reading this far. any ideas on rh10 recording would be appreciated.
  19. Hello, just throwing in my thoughts. i used an archos 20gb recorder, one of the original ones that could go up to 160kbs vbr. it sounded ok but not as good as my older sharp minidisc recorders. it was easier to use because it goes straight to mp3 (which i realize is bad). it was easier to make copies for friends. the recording levels are hard to see, but it was a lit up screen. i put in a 40gb drive and now i could record for hours on end. also, rockbox is a newer firmware and it adds lots of stability and useful features. i do think in general, most mp3/wav recorders that are harddrive or memory card based sacrifice a lot of sound quality. plus, they do stupid things like update the firmware and it adds restrictions to the recording quality. ie, i bought a jriver 1gb drive and besides not having recording levels, they restricted line in recording to 128 or 160 when u update the firmware. the device can physically record at 320kbs so thats just stupid recording industry shenanegans trying to make my life more difficult. most of these problem with md are hopefully going to be solved with my new rh10. finally a backlight screen, and in the 8 years i've been doing this technology has come a long way and people around me wont be as shocked to see me looking at a little electronic device. i'm sure most would think its a phone. the m-audio microtrack has promise, but i doubt its any better than the current himd offerings as far as audio quality (maybe a bit below after reading some reviews). cost was about twice as much as well. its amazing i paid $150 less for a pcm recording himd than i did a sharp 701 a few years back. too bad they can't keep all this piracy junk from infringing on technology. thats another issue i guess.
  20. yeah, if you could let me know how its done, or provide some pictures that would be great. i do have some leftover caps somewhere. it didnt' happen too much, and there are certainly a lot of other factors to consider also, may have had a poor 9V battery as well. i just thought that i could lower the bass input a bit and that would help the clipping somewhat, or at least even it out. most shows are way over the top on bass because of the environment. after looking around, it seems as if i was probably using the 1 uF capacitor, so perhaps 2.2 uF will make a little diffence. I was thinking as i wrote the last message, that its amazing how clear these mics can be. they do a lot better than my own ears when i'm there. i learned early on it is just plain stupid to not have earplugs in if you are at a show that needs a battery box. I wish more people would point that out. i'd like to be able to hear these recordings several years down the road. anyway, i'm off to radioshack to get some parts, and will be soldering tonight. thanks again.
  21. thanks for the explanation of all that. i had heard several people (probably you at some point) mention to avoid bass roll off as much as possible and rely on post processing if necessary. the problem is almost everything i record is way too bass-y. and its a pain for me to adjust the eq settings all the time if i go from studio songs to live recordings. i know i could do it in a program like soundforge as well. sometimes its hard getting an accurate recording that doesn't overload (even with a battery box) when the band you're recording takes pride in being the loudest around. i've had one or two shows that have had clipping solely because of the bass and the acoustics of the small bar. thought this might be a way to alleviate some of that. however, looking at radioshack and what i have available, looks like i'm going with 10k and 2.2 because of availability. thanks again for the help and ideas.
  22. Hello all, I've got a few concerts coming up soon. I've made two battery boxes in the past few years and have been through a few designs. I built one with an altoids box a long time ago, amazing that site is still around to show those pictures. I'm mostly going to rock concerts with very high spl's. with my new box, i'd like to adjust the bass roll off ever so slightly, but i'm not sure how exactly. I will be using some self made panasonic cap mics. and a new rh10 if it gets here in time. I am just fascinated at how small you guys have made this thing, i never thought to have the battery just suspended by the attachment like that. think i still might run some duct tape around it to be safe, but i like the look and simplicity. couldnt' find these answers while searching. so, now on with my questions.. does anyone know how to adjust the capacitor to lower the bass roll off, how does it affect the amount (dB) of drop and the starting point (kHz)?? i know there are equations but i couldn't find the line-in impedence on the rh10. what exactly happens with a lower and a higher resistor? i know 1% metal film are recommended. i'm not sure if i have any local dealers in central illinois that i can drive to to get those, and dont have time to order online. should i just buy several of the 5% and get two with about equal resistances on my multimeter? isnt' the 1% and 5% really all about tolerances? i am totally hobby on this and only have my fading gen physics class to guide me. I hope someone can help me out with this soon, my big concert is on saturday and i just found this the other day or i would have started sooner. thanks for the ideas and any help. please email, but i think it woudl be beneficial to get everything her for people as well. EDIT::: added some pics of what i did, there are a few more of my older ones in the gallery section[attachmentid=931][attachmentid=932][attachmentid=933]
