Does anyone know if Sony is still making ANY Hi-MD players? Only the MZ-M200 if anything? Any reliable information vs. "rumours." I would think that another company (Onkyo, etc) would make some hardware and market it "correctly" to the world and emphasize sound quality and recordability, etc. Thanks for your replies. PS - I have both ipod and MD units. I am always amazed how "nice" the MD sounds in comparison to the iPod. I would love to know that I can play my Hi-MD discs on "something" in 20 years...although my hearing would be shot

Thanks again for everyone's help. I have not gotten away from MD. I had plenty of extra hardware, and sold accordingly. Just acquired too much. There was a misprint with my experience wit the LAM - It sounds warm at low volumes, but as the volume is increased, it becomes tinny. The speakers it comes with are fine for a small office environment - but I could not see using this thing for a party, etc. PS - Good observation Mr. Wizard.

Thanks to those who have replied so far. I am still in limbo regarding this unit. The design is cool, and low profile. Only 1/8" headphone outs - so I cannot digital out to any secondary components (would be nice to have an optical out!). I have been with MD since the days of the "deck & player bundles" - if you can remember that! Once I get switched over to ENGLISH, will give a better review. The sound is very "tinny" at loud volumes . Sounds nice and warm at lower dB's. Again, thanks for the help!

Here's the short saga: I put in my favorite Hi-MD - 2 years in the making of best of the best music. I expected a long night of good tunes. The MZ-M100 briefly showed the "information" for the last MD I had in there - 1 week ago, and then said the disc I had was not playable or readable. Bottom Line = Dead Hi-MD disc, had to reformat. Is this phenomenon common? I have been with the MD since the days of the $500 bundle of the (Walkman and Deck) - 1990s... If my discs start to get corrupted, Steve Jobs will have another iClone. Thanks!!!!

MD will still be here with us in 100 years. The Hardware will be available. That is how it will differ from the other formats. iPods will Morph into something different - but I am sure quite cool. MD = Retro. Just look at Vinyl. (Portable Vinyl?????)

I like to think that 30 years from now, whatever the Electronic Companies offer consumers for music listening, I will be chillin with my MD recording from 1999. And people will look at me and say "what the H is that!"

Hello Fellow MDs: I have been using MD since the 80's and still use the format for my music needs. I suffered a HD crash of my personal MP3 backups, almost 1TB. Since that sad day, I have been re-acquiring music, and using 2 external HD's for backup. Considering HD's eventually fail, I am now using Hi-MD to keep another "backup" of music. I still have some old Sony 74min discs, and they always work. I use a 80G iPod in my office which plays all day long - and eventually know that it will die and be a paperweight. Its a good feeling knowing that I can have my music library on 50 HI-MD's, and that they will be around for my kids and grandkids (retro). IOW - when I am sitting in my nursing home days, I want to be listening to Pearl Jam on my MD player... Has anyone experienced any MD failure for storage of ATRAC/MP3 files? I know if a recorder errors out during a TOC writing process, you are screwed, but under normal circumstances, it seems the MO medium is very hardy. I look forward to your replies. David in Virginia

Any news from CES 2007 regarding our beloved format? Anything?

Yes. MD is not Dead. It will long be around after I am gone. It will forever be a niche - cool product for those of us that know better. When I go on a long trip, I always grab my MD's verses the iPods. I keep the Ipods on in the office for 10 hours a day - and they do their job. For private listening - it's always the MD's. I have even hooked up the Onkyo Hi-MD to the Bose Tower System - and it is awesome! Hat's off to all MD people! David

I have noticed this since MD's debut many years ago. I remember when Sears carried a "MD Package" for $500 which included a MD Deck and a 1st Gen Walkman. I think I bought the only one [in Tampa]. These big companies make their money on the commercial success electronics. Just llok at their CD's and DVD's. Mostly all Top 40. I think the Internet will be the medium for MD purchases for most people. Hopefully at least until I am in a Nursing Home on alot of IV meds and listening to Pearl Jam's "10" on my MD! I have an iPod, actually 2 of them. I have the Bose iPod speakers, the JBL iPod speakers. They work great as standalone Jukeboxes. But for sound quality and archiving, MD is KING. The sound quality is awesome for audiophile listening.
