I've recorded via the line in and mic in jacks. They work fine. That means its the battery box. Which puts me in a dillema: should I try building another one? or just buy it? decisions....decisions....decisions......
I understand that you dont need a battery box when recording via mic in and its not too loud. I was just testing to see if the battery box would work and as greenmachine said it shouldn't affect the mic at all. Thats the wierd thing though. It was almost like it was attenuating the signal making it weaker. I didnt check the levels because I was trying to be stealth but I recorded a different show and I got very low levels on high sensitivity at 30/30. That just doesnt seem right. I tried a different battery and results were the same, very low levels from the mic in.
I went to record a concert yesterday using a battery box built using greenmachine's instructions, sound professional's BMC-2 mics, and my sony NH-700. I plugged the mic -> battery box -> mic in on the NH-700. I set the levels at 30/30 and put the mics on high sensitivity and pressed record. I went home, listened, and got absolutely nothing. Just a whole bunch of white noise. I did record a louder show before going from the battery box to the mic in and got misteriously low levels at 30/30 and high sensitivity. At home I went from the mics directly -> the mic in jack and everything worked just fine. So something is happenening betwen the mic the battery box and the mic in. My questions is: Is the battery box not working properly? If so how can I fix it?
Ok I took pictures. I think Ive figured it out. 1 is ground, 2 is left, and 5 is right. I just dont know what 3 or 4 are and what to do with them. The cable is red, blue, and gold. I dont know which is which except for red, which is right.
Your help is very much appreciated. Im very new to this How do I know what goes to where? I know there are right left and ground wires in my output cable. How do I connect those 3 to the 5 contacts?
Does it matter what kind of stereo jack you use? I went to radioshack and saw two types. One with (excuse the technical jargon)5 metal thingys on the bottom on the bottom and one with 3 metal thingys on the bottom. They were both 3 conducter. The 3 metal thingy looked like the picture attached.
Im trying to record a funk group (3 piece) that can get pretty loud. All I have access too are two sm57s, a mixer, and a mz-nh700. I was just wondering what the difference is between condenser or dynamic mics. Whats the difference in quality? Which might sound better? I have read some criticisms on the sm57s in this forum but despite this whats the best way to record with. Through the mic in? Line in? Through the mixer into the line in? How do I get stereo? Also, if I were to buy a condenser mic could I go from the mixer to the line in or would I need a batter box?
