I've got a Sharp MD-DR480 and I charge it at work without a dock. I use a plug-in transformer that says SONY on it, I guess from an old cd player. You can use any transformer that 1) has 5 volt DC output, 2) has a center-positive connector, and 3) fits (i.e. plugs into) the bottom of the MD-DR480. Radio Shack should be able to sell you one.
