Well no luck: SP Disk just reads ERROR and spits out. LP2 Disk reads BLANK and spits out. *sigh*

I purchased a Skyline from Japan, came with a Sony MiniDisc [MDX-C5300]. I've been trying to record MDs and play them in the car, but it will either return ERROR or BLANK. I've tried recording in LP2 (which I assume is too new), and Compatibility Mode (SP) in Sonic Stage with no luck. Is there a format difference between NA and JP? Would I need different disks or different software? Any help would be appreciated -- of course there is also the possibility the head unit is just FUBAR. EDIT: I did a little more searching on the forum and found that there is no difference in format or region. I've initialized the disk and try recording again in SP mode (just in case). I understand these can be a bit particular.
