Latest Windows Update Issues With SonicStage?

I ran the windows update on Tuesday and now none of my Sony stuff works. On my home PC I still use OpenMG Jukebox 2.2 and SonicStage 1.5 because I prefer to use Real Player for transferring songs. With these applications they crash when I try to convert and copy a song onto my Mini Disc player.

I have a test PC at work that I have SonicStage 2.2 installed on and that program fails to finish launching before it crashes.

The only common thread that I can see between my home work and test PCs are the windows updates. Does anyone know anything about this? The Sony guy kept insisting that I uninstall and reinstall and I've done that. After an hour of uninstalling and reinstalling with all the latches it is an hour before I return to where I began.

I didn't check there but I uninstalled, deleted all directories related to the application (3 different places), rebooted and cleaned the registry.

What I did just now try was a system restore to the point before I installed all of Microsoft's critical updates and voila, my Sony Apps work again.

The frustrating part was the lack of support from everyone I talked to with Sony's support staff.

New to the forum so please bear with me...

I too have had SonicStage2.1 start to crash on me whenever I try to convert files to ATRAC3. Tried the usual stuff; uninstalling (as per the instructions), re-installing, rolling back to v1.5 & even OMG2.0 but the problem persists. Tried upgrading to SonicStage2.2 but that crashed upon opening before I could even do anything. Also tried removing and re-installing the ATRAC3 codec to no avail.

The only thing I've done in the last week is to update Windows2000 with the latest updates so I'm in agreement with crichton007 that the updates are causing problems (both to SonicStage and my sanity!!)

The exact error message I get is "Program Error: Omgjbox.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log has been created" - useful eh?

The (Dr Watson) error log gives the error "c0000005 (access violation)" & bunch of hex gobble-de-gook. I could send it to anyone who understands these things.

Anyone else had this or know of a solution please help

I've "encountered" a problem with Sonic Stage which I, too, think traces back originally to a Windows Auto Update. SS stopped working, so I un- and re-installed it, but now the shagger can't find my Openmg Secure Module. I searched for it myself, but it's nowhere to be found. I've spent the last two days removing SS, then reinstalling from my CD-Rom and from the Sony site, but none of these epic installs seems to provide me with a new Secure Module.

I tried a system restore to --> two weeks ago, then Sonic Stage began opening to a blank immovable box with scroll bars. Not _much_ less annoying than the real thing, but not what I want. Does anyone have any idea where Sony is hiding my piece of missing setup material?

Colin.

Your problem sounds a bit more than just the Windows update snag that I've been suffering. From your talk of Restore Points I gather you are using XP which I have no experience of. However, I would suggest following the un/re-install process outlined in this forum exactly - Unsurprisingly, for such a quality piece of software, SS leaves trash behind. I've also found it can have problems with Roxio CD creator.

I read elsewhere in this forum (can't find where now) that the offending article as far as Windows 2k goes is the Security Update KB840987. I uninstalled this and SonicStage sprung back into life

I'm a beginner too, quite stressed out that SonicStage is misbehaving as I have a whole bunch of students waiting to hear their stories they've been recording. I have a couple of questions related to the above. Someone who replied to the SS Problems, Help! posting said that Windows Media Player can still play the Mini Disc files as it encounters Windows XP. First question, why bother with SS if WPM works? Thanks for your thoughts.

Try this:

How to properly reinstall NetMD:

WARNING: If you use a Sony VAIO with preinstalled software provided by Sony or use other software developed by Sony, do not follow the procedure below.

1. Uninstall all OpenMG related software via the Add/Remove Programs control panel and reboot as necessary. This includes, but is not limited to, OpenMG 2.2, related 'Limited Patches' and the 'Secure Module', SonicStage 1.x/2.x, Simple Burner 1.x/2.x, and software by RealNetworks. Make sure that you unplug your unit before doing so.

2. If you run Windows XP/Windows 2000 Professional, proceed to delete the following directories: "Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataSony Corporation", "Program FilesCommon FilesSony Shared", "Program FilesSony".

3. Start -> Run -> regedit. The 'Registry Editor' utility should appear on your screen. Delete the references to OpenMG located under 'HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareSony Corporation' and 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareSony Corporation' by right-clicking on the entries.

4. Disabling any anti-virus software that is running in the background to free up some resources [if necessary]. Update your installation of Windows at Microsoft Windows Update (windowsupdate.microsoft.com). For Windows 2000 Professional users, you are recommended to upgrade to Service Pack 3 or later. Make sure that your unit is disconnected and install the latest build of SonicStage 2.x from Sony Connect/Sony Connect Europe. The drivers for Sony units will automaticaly be installed. (If you use a Panasonic or Sharp Hi-MD/NetMD unit, install your drivers before you install the actual software!) Restart if prompted to do so; if not, it is still recommended that you do so. Plug in your unit, and start SonicStage 2.x.

OR:

A Windows Hotfix (KB840987) conflicts with Omgjbox.exe - if you are experiencing problems and do not need the functionality of the Hotfix, rollback the fix.
