From reading posts on this forum, I am pretty close to buying a sony hi-md. Like others here, I am interested in making field/environmental recordings for later integration into music on the PC. Downloading uncompressed data and converting to .wav is essential for me, and seemed like a problem until I read on this forum how it can be resolved with some third party software. The only question I have left is which hi-md. I notice there is more than 1 model: Sony MZ-NH600 Hi-MD Sony MZ-NH700 Hi-MD Sony MZ-NH800 Hi-MD Sony MZ-NH900 Hi-MD Given that my needs are primarily recording sounds for use in music compositions (and maybe recording rehearsals too), I don't want to pay for a model with functions and accessories I dont need. The 600 is cheapest but there any difference between the models in terms of getting a good result in recording? I was thinking about using the nifty rode nt4 stereo condensor microphone with it. I'm not that knowledgeable about live recording stuff, but I can definitely help you with your unit decision.. Honestly, I would recommend the NH700 or the NH900. The NHF800 has a radio, and is a pretty functional unit, but not really relevant in this situation..unless you'd find the need for such. What's your maximum budget for the unit alone? The 700 sounds just fine (i dont need the radio) but the 900 could be good too if available at a good price as Kurisu quoted. But I have a hesitation. here is a question: I am from Australia. The hi-md units sold here are hideously expensive compared to the stuff you can by from web retailers. I would prefer to purchase from a web retailer, however, I am pretty sure the power supply is different is oz and is not compatible. I could probably get a converter I suppose. A440 Posted October 18, 2004 Report Share Posted October 18, 2004 You'll also have to see if the web retailers will ship to Australia. Without an adapter, you could always just stick to batteries. I don't think I've used the adapter yet with my NHF800. If it turns out you can't find a compatible adapter, then definitely get the 700, which runs on a basic AA battery, rather than the 900, which has a rechargeable that would require plugging in. But I would prefer to keep the price in the mid 300s australian dollars including postage. I would probably compromise on the power adaptor for a good price.
