techristian
Is it even possible? Do I need an A/D converter? I think that it has a LINE input. (The writing on the unit is so small.) I was given this MINIDISK as a gift because of 30 years service with my employer. I wanted it mostly for recording DRUM SAMPLES out in the FIELD. techristian
oK I have been doing some reading. Some have said that the N510 will record LINE LEVEL source. This is very good. I may still be able to find my old Realistic PHONO pre-amp. It runs on a single 9 volt battery and is stereo. Because it uses RCA PHONO plugs, I would only need to make an adapter to fit whatever microphone and another adapter for the MZ-N510 input. If I can't find the old pre-amp , PAiA electronics makes a pre-amp kit for only around $25. I built PAiA kits since the 70's so that isn't a problem for me. dex Otaku
You can't use a phono preamp with microphones. Phono preamps apply a rather harsh equalisation curve to make LPs play with "flat" response. A portable stereo mic preamp with plug-in power is what you'll probably need. Reactive Sounds and Sound Professionals both make good pocket-sized preamps like this which sell for $150-200USD. It would probably be more interesting to see what kind of performance you can get out of something you've built yourself, though.
techristian
Here is the link tp the PAiA PRE-AMP. http://paia.com/riaa.htm The PAiA design is also made for PHONO. It has been over 20 years since I dealt with the nice PAiA people, but I'm sure that they would help me to find the correct CAPACITOR values to create the proper rolloff frequency for microphone recording. dex Otaku
I'll try again: You CAN NOT USE a phono preamp for microphones! I'm sure they might have a preamp kit made -for- microphones. It's more than just an EQ curve, it's also exactly what gain it uses. Phono preamps are not often variable-gain [or variable output].
