Question

Hi, by mistake I posted this at the mini disc forum, and I was asked to move the questions here instead:

"Quick question for Vaio pocket users. If I use SS 3.2 to create mp3 files or atrac files with no DRM, drop them into the Vaio using the SS 3.2 software (or the Vaio transfer software), Can I transfer them to any computer after that??? Only to a computer using SS3.2???? or the Vaio pocket itself will add the DRM making impossible to transfer the info to the 3 computers I have at home. I don't want to use the Vaio as a external drive to transfer the info and have the same files with DRM to listen to them, it kills the whole point of having 40 GB of space.

Thank you in advance for your response. "

Welcome to ALC, Pato!

It's highly plausible with non-DRM ATRAC3plus. However, I still need to conduct a test as my current library consist of DRM ATRAC3plus.

I've conducted the test you've requested and I can confirm that non-DRM ATRAC files can be transferred to another computer for SonicStage 3.2 playback – only possible if you utilize the VAIO Pocket as a removable media as a means of transfer. However, you cannot transfer non-DRM ATRAC files originated from another computer (transferred via SonicStage 3.2 to the VAIO Pocket) into the music library of another SonicStage 3.2.

Thank you for doing this!!!

:ol_cry: I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed about the results. I guess the only way to change this is with a firmware update, but somebody told me that Sony wouldn’t make any changes for this player anymore. Is this true???

Now I'm not sure about buying this player. I will take a decision this week.

Thank you again for the test

The last firmware update was sometime in December 2004. Future firmware updates are somewhat slim in my opinion – hopefully, Sony will come to recognize the sudden popularity of its VAIO Pocket and continue to support the device accordingly.

Nonetheless, the features currently offered by the VAIO Pocket far outweigh its inability to transfer non-DRM ATRAC-type files originated from another computer (transferred via SonicStage 3.2 to the VAIO Pocket) into the music library of another SonicStage 3.2. But, then that’s my opinion. If this is a huge problem, you should enquire if other ATRAC related device can transfer non-DRM ATRAC-type files according to your requirement.

You are right about the features, and we can add price and capacity on the top of that . I will buy the pocket from ecost today. Looks like Sony is listening to the customers lately (SonicStage 3.2 as an example), so hopefully they will give us an update sometime.

Thank you again for all yourr help!!!!!!

unfortunately, as we know, the VAIO Pocket's "sudden popularity" was caused by the recent price drop due to the pending discontinuation of the model. While I would like to think that Sony would give us one more update, I have slim hopes for it.

Was the NW-HD1 discontinued already when the Feb 2005 "mp3" firmware was released?

My order from ecost was canceled. :ol_angry: They don't have the Vaio pocket anymore!!!! :ol_cry:
