JuT
OK, I started the unit by pressing 'REC' then pausing it about two seconds later. The disc made a strange sound like it was reading the same area over and over. 'DATA SAVE' flash for about 45 seconds and the the message 'REC ERR' came up. Now when i use any disk i get the msg 'READ ERR' Is there any way to fix this without sending the unit away? I'm desperate 'cause i need it for a Uni project thats due in 2 weeks. Thanks EDIT: After reading around a bit, the problem could be something to do with the laser alignment or the motor? (forgive me, im new at this) Is there a way to set some sort of auto alignment? dex Otaku
Yes. It's called taking the unit to Sony and having them repair or replace it under warranty.
Christopher
Save the harsh response, :rasp:, Dex is sorta right. There is a way you can align the laser block, but this is not an easy procedure. Gently push the laser block back to the beginning of it's track. Sometimes the pickup gets jammed or misaligned on the sled (aka "worm gear") and it can't align it self so as to focus the pickup on the right place. In some cases it is just out of alignment and in some others the pickup gets stuck in that position alone. Pushing the sled back to its start position manually can sometimes put it "back on track" properly and sort of "reset" everything. Then when you put in the disc/close it up everything is back to normal. Same thing happened to me on a couple of units and they worked fine again after performing the procedure. While you're at it you can also dip a cotton swab in some alcohol and gently clean the lens for good measure (usually a good idea if the unit is older) but be careful the pickup is delicate! jadeclaw
@JuT: This shouldn't happen to a new unit. Instead of trying to repair it, take out the batteries for a minute to reset the unit, then try again with a fresh disc.. If that doesn't help, pack up everything and return the unit for exchange. Remember, you have warranty on the unit.
