campekenobi
Yes, very basic dumb question to all of you, but my encoding choices are the following: OpenMG Audio (ATRAC3): 132kps/105kps/66kps OpenMG Audio (ATRAC3plus): 256kps/64kps/48kps OpenMG Audio (PCM): 1411kps WAV (PCM): 1411kps I don't see where this "LP" mode fits into what everyone is talking about, unless that's for line or mic-in recoring. Next important quesiton: which is better: ATRAC3plus 64kps or ATRAC3 132kps?? I know that 132 should sound better, but Sony tauts that 3PLUS has better compression quality. RichM
LP is the abbreviation of "Long Play" LP2 = ATRAC3 @ 132kps LP4 = ATARC3 @ 66kbps Hi-LP = ATRAC3plus @ 64kbps Next important quesiton: which is better: ATRAC3plus 64kps or ATRAC3 132kps?? Give them both a try on a sample track and judge for yourself.
campekenobi
Ok - I appreciate the feedback. However, I've tried LP2 (132kbps) and it sounds basically like an MP3 from a PC, whereas the ATRAC3plus @256kbps sounds very much like a regular CD... which brings MD almost pointless as far as being able to store much material on a single disc... I ripped two lengthy CDs and tried putting them both on an 80-min regular MD disc... both CDs could fit MINUS one track (using ATRAC3plus@256)! Yeah, I know the hi-MDs are much better, but they are more rare & expensive right now (not to mention they look SO blah!!). It would almost have been better if I never heard the 256kbps in the first place... tough to go back.

We all managed back then with all the disc swapping. Still it's all a question of balance between quantity and quality. Up until I got a Hi-MD recorder, I used Atrac Type-R all the time on my N10 because LP2 was too much of a compromise in terms of quality, and now the lowest I use Atrac3plus@256 kbps. If you want the 1Gb discs, you can get them from Bluetin or Audiocubes, both have great service, they're not really that expensive considering. It would almost have been better if I never heard the 256kbps in the first place... tough to go back.Better not try PCM then! Edit: Wow you've posted 70 times in the last 10 days. Are you saying when I buy sony blank 80min MDs, I need to FORMAT them before using? I haven't done so... ??? Oh - and just to let you know, i'm not talking about any LINE IN recording, just strictly SonicStage ripping. Edit: Wow you've posted 70 times in the last 10 days.Is that a problem?? I'm just new and have lots of questions.

Are you saying when I buy sony blank 80min MDs, I need to FORMAT them before using? I haven't done so... ???You can use old MD discs and format them into Hi-MD mode, allowing for more storage space. It's discussed in the user manual, I believe. Is that a problem?? I'm just new and have lots of questions.Definitely not! That's what forums are for.
campekenobi
Hmm.... when I put a blank ol MD, the capacity reads in Sonic Stage 290.9MB... so you're saying I can somehow format the disc to hold MORE??? (darn it - I left my manual at work!!!) Actually -- I just "initialized" it to hi-MD... still same capacity...
Christopher
Sounds like it automatically formatted it for you, then. But yes. 290 is the max capacity for what I assume is a 74 minute disc. 300 is for the 80 minute ones.. But you must realize that they were half that. It's a sweet trade, imho.
campekenobi
hmm... actually, it is an 80 min one.. but what's 10kb anyway.
