Christopher
If you're referring to the NH600D, I believe it's more than satisfactory for most applications. It really depends on the headphones your using, but as long as you don't buy a UK unit you should be fine. Welcome to the forums, btw. justin_barbier
If I could add something... most of the people reviewing the nh600d (or other MD players) are either looking for an MP3 player, or are not really keen to the advantages of such a device (md.) Not bashing the 600D, but there are far better units. You just need to shop around and do your homework... But make sure you are into MD for the right reasons. MD players can be manipulated into playing MP3 (and other formats,) but if you are looking SOLELY for mp3, there is better out there. Sorry if I am making the wrong assumption of your situations, but the general case with MD players is that a lot of ppl label (and market) the units as MP3 players, which basically, they are not. gl

justin_barbier
Yea man, I see what you are saying. I just wasnt sure if you were familiar with the technology... but I feel that the people on this board are a lot more knowledgeable than the reviewers on cnet. Research the units here, because the info REALLY helped me. gl
Qwakrz
Alot of people that buy the 600 unit, I believe, like to listen to music the way a friend of mine does. We can hear the track he is listening to through a double skinned wall & that is with a set of in ear earphons that he likes to use. I dont hold out much hope for is hearing. Personally I like my NH1 & rarely go above 12 on the sound meter. This would probably equate to about 18-20 on a UK NH600. Get a set of good earphones that are sensative and it should be fine. Qwakrz
The best advice I would give is pop along to somewhere that has a Hi-MD unit (600, 700 or 800 as they have the same output and amp) and listen to some music with your headphones you will use. This would give you some idea of what the output is like. If you dont have any minidiscs, the shop should have some or take along your CD player and use the Hi-MD to record a short piece to listen back to. (Non EU 600's dont record from an external source, only a PC). BTW, the max volume for the unit is 30 on the guage & I do use in-ear headphones. Personally you should be ok with a non EU Hi-MD, I know I am.
JavaGeek
Well, I just bought an 800, and I keep it at Vol. 12. Granted, this is inside an office, but I'm sure the unit is capable of so much more. The unit even came with a sound guide that tells you how many decibels will make you deaf. Also, the unit has AVLS, which limits the max audio so you don't get sudden bursts of sound. If Sony implemented that, it might speak something about how loud they can get (when you turn AVLS off, that is)
jadeclaw
Point to remember: Most earbuds/In-earphones can achieve 100 to 115 decibels per mWatt. A constant noise level above 85 decibels can lead to permanent loss of hearing. That is a general consensus amongst scientists and medical doctors. On the other paw, to double the loudness, you need ten times the power, in that view, the difference between the US (5mW) and the european (3mW) models can almost be neglected...
