doclloyd
The subject basically speaks for itself. I'm looking for a sound card that isn't too expensive (<$100 if possible) that has Optical out capabilities (in wouldn't be so bad either.) I currently have a SB PCI128 card. Basic, gets the job done for day to day. Starting to look for more as I delve into music creation on the side (just got ACID Music Studio 5.0). Does it just make sense to get a USB audio device with this functionality instead? Thoughts are appreciated.
jadeclaw
External devices have the advantage of being isolated from all the electrical noise inside a pc. My choice would be one of these: http://www.edirol.com/products/info/ua3fx.html Plus, a USB-device can be used on Laptops. Not having to use a screwdriver is an advantage too. doclloyd
Thanks... I hear what you're saying about the USB devices. I will be looking into these devices. I'm waiting to see what the company does for Christmas bonuses ... if it's decent enough, I'll have to buy some things for myself...
A440
While I drool over the Edirol, I note that you were looking for something under $100. Creative often sells its own Extigy refurbished on Ebay for something like $70, and it's got optical in/out and lots of other input-outputs. Here's one listed: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...ssPageName=WDVW The Philips Aurilium was designed as an answer to the Extigy, check those out too. Hyena
Well, if you're willing to spend about $120.00 you can probably pick up an E-MU 0404 soundcard. I have one in my "studio computer" (Pretty much a crappy computer that I use to mix and edit things that I record. ;P) Really, the inputs/outputs of the card can't be beat for the price: Two 1/4" Analog Inputs and Outputs Optical 24-bit/96kHz S/PDIF In/Out (switchable to AES/EBU) Coaxial 24-bit/96kHz S/PDIF In/Out (switchable to AES/EBU) MIDI In/Out It works flawlessly with FL Studio, so I assume that it would work just as well with Acid.
