Chut
Hi Guys, I've recently bought a Sony MP3 player (NW-HD3) but have also had the below problems with sony mini-disc players too so hoping one of you guys will be able to help me! I've found that when listening the volume is very quiet when set to maximum, the earphones i'm using have their inline control set to max and ALVS is switched off. Its quite bad that sometimes I can hear traffic noise over the music. Do you have any tips or tricks of how to increase the volume, either by getting amplified headphones or something like that? Any advice appreciated Cheers Andy

Damage
Try the player without the in-line control (provided that it is independent of the player, e.g. inline volume controller and not the remote) and see if that helps. Try it with different set of headphones, with and without the inline controller. As for AMPS, better headphone suggestions, etc. after reading upon recommendations here, I'd recommend head-fi (http://www.head-fi.org), but becareful, your wallet will take some punishement if you spend any significant time there.
