Davew
Hi matt, I have had no problems with my 800 (the only problems I have had are with SonicStage and I have learned to think and plan ahead so that i'm not caught out by its limitations) The sound quality, as far as I am concerened, is fine. However, be warned, the surround sound modes are pretty rubbish so don't expect too much from them. The unit does not have a line out, but you can use the volume setting 27 to get a good substitute, and I have never found it to be a limitation. The radio remote is a nice plus, but does use more power than you might expect. On the subject of battery life, I use a 2300 mAh rechargable AA battery (that can be recharged in the unit, and performs very well) and that is one of the reasons why I didn't go for a MZ-NH900, I wanted to be able to use AA batteries without the extra bulk of a gumstick pack. Be carefull though, for recording (and Hi-MD playback on a normal AA) it can go flat fairly quickly. I think that if you think the features look ideal to you (it was the same position for me, I just didn't need the extra features of the 900) then you should go for it, as long as you are aware of the issues regarding copyright management and the use restirctions put in place by Sony. Hope this helps, Dave
vapor matt
thanks for your input dave! the more i read the more iam confussed! like this volume issue with the european models. how do you find the volume on yours? seems some stupid french law prevents mobile devices outputing more than 3mv when US models output 5mv What i would like to know is where i can buy a US model of either the 800 or 900 that either can be shipped here or purchased here in the uk as i dont see why i should be govened by a stupid french law anyway! dam french wish they would mind there own business! still undecided of which model to go for but looking at the spec's and reports i would sooner buy an imported version than a european version. but where from. any recomendations anyone? matt
yakko
I have a US model 900 and love it. I didn't really want the radio of the 800. I also liked the rechargeable battery option on the 900. I picked the 900 over the NH1 because of the ability to add the AA battery on the side of the unit when needed. I don't think either unit will be a bad choice. Just go with what fits your needs best. Steep learning curve for me, but I will perservere. My only complaint is that the reception isn't great and there is a bit of a problem with the actual input for the headphones, a certain amount of irritating interference. I have tried several headphones and some work better than others and adding a few line filters definately helps, although it tends to pull your ears down. The best reception can be obtained though by walking around with the MD and the radio remote in each hand with your arms held high above your head (bit impractical if you are carrying anything else and people look at you funny). Line filters though seem to be the best solution and the Canadian version (at least) includes a few extra's.
Damage
Having used both:I'd give a slight edge to 900 over 800 for couple of reasons:1. Battery pack does add a bit of a bulk, but the battery life you gain is extra 20 or so odd hours that Sony may quote. So you get about 30+ odd hours. With the AA pack, you don't lose much in the way of battery versatility either. Oh, no battery bump, and this is a huge difference!2. HD Digital Amp. With a nicer portable headphones, you'll find the audio out from the headphone jack nicer sounding overall. Now, nicer here does not mean neutral/flat or audiophile flat. It is, however, very agreeable, but that detail is lost if you use inferior to average set of cans. 3. Backlit Remote. World Versions receives the vaunted MC40 Remote. However, if loss of these does not bother you, then the AM/FM radio that you get with 800 may be worth the tradeoff. insurgente
3. Backlit Remote. World Versions receives the vaunted MC40 Remoteso which is the "world" version? the one sold in america, europe, japan?I didnt realise that difference between european and american output. I was thinking of just getting one here in the uk, but maybe i'll get one in america instead....does this output disparity make much a of a difference? Christopher
To some people, the difference is very apparent. I would suggest going for an american/world unit. A good place to buy is Minidisco, etronics.com, bluetin.com, teamdigitial.net, and more.
