OVERVIEW: Well, about time. The company that pioneered personal stereos could finally reclaim its crown with ultra-stylish designs like this.
FEATURES: Dimensions 36 x 48 x 18mm. Weight 54g. 256Mb of memory. Plays MP3, ATRAC audio files. USB transfer. Uses AAA battery. About 50 hours of battery life.
THE GOOD: Sony's new range of MP3 players look very cool indeed. After years of languishing behind its competitors, Sony seems to again be trying to set the agenda in terms of audio design. This player has been out for quite a few months now and is being phased out, but you might still be able to find discounted units in some stores. Its successors are starting to be released – let's hope they build on the E70's strengths, which include a very effective corner-mounted jog-wheel, and sound that is pristine and elegant for electronica or classical tracks, but has significant bass grunt for raucous rock music.
THE BAD: There are not many drawbacks, really, apart from the severe lack of memory capacity – which will no doubt be improved for the new models – and no FM radio. The menus could be a bit easier to navigate but, on the whole, this is a quality product.
E70 users, how do you feel? Despite it's brief summation, the point about menu structure seems critical. Is navigation a problem with it's small size?
