teos
Hi all,I just recorded a live concert using my new Sony MD recorder MZ-N707 and made the huge mistake of trusting the Automatic Record Level and it came out all distorted...during the quieter spots, between songs, and when the performer speaks the sound is fine. But when the loud music starts it just distprts an clips and is quite upsetting. I used a Stereo T Mic that plugged into the Mic In of the Recorder. Next time I will try using the Manual Record for loud concerts and lower the levels and it should be fine.. My real concern and question is can this recording be fixed, improved or salvaged in any way so its at least listenable? Would running it through some software help clean up the sound or is it just too late for that? Please someone help who knows anything at all about this as this was an important recording for my daughter and i am unable to find it anywhere else right now. It was the Hilary Duff concert in Winnipeg Canada Jan. 10/05...My deepest thanks to all who read this and respond with any suggestions for help.Feel free to email me or post any help.Stay well everyone!Todd
A440
Unfortunately, there's little you can do with your distorted recording. All you have on the disc is the distortion and clipping; there's no good information to extract. On the other hand, Hilary Duff is bound to put out a DVD of the tour sooner or later. The MZ-N707 mic preamp simply can't handle bass, even at low volume settings. Next time, run the mic through the Radio Shack Heaphone Volume Control/Heaphone Extension Cord attenuator (pictured with my signature) and you should be fine. Mic-->RS-->Mic Jack. Sorry about your show, but rest assured you're not the only one it's happened to. It doesn't really matter in a loud concert, but that T-mic will pick up noise and vibration from the MD player. You're better off putting it on an extension cord.
craftech
I don't know what you are using for a microphone, but usually when you use mikes that depend upon the "plug in power" of the mic input on the recorder they can't handle high SPL's. That is where the modified mics using the battery boxes are useful. They can usually handle higher SPL's. However, you need to use manual gain rather than AGL (which happens to be really poor on the Sony units anyway).John Edited January 16, 2005 by craftech
