Mz-s1 Won't Record--safe To Use?

Hello,

Well my MZ-S1 portable fell from the car to the concrete driveway, and now it won't record--in fact, recording will erase the disc. It seems to play fine, although I only used it on a test MD in case it wipes it clean.

Since I use a different unit to record, I'd still like to use the S1 as just a player.

If I write-protect all my discs, am I still running the risk of accidently erasing them just by playing them? Are the recording and playing functions separate?

Thanks very much for any info.
