mp3 itself is a open format

u can find lots of encoder and decoder on the internet

so I can say, different encoder and/or decoder will make it different for ur final hearing of the mp3 music

how u encode CD into mp3 with different encoder(on ur computer) did make a difference

how ur mp3 player decode them into audio also make a difference

so it's pointless to compare MP3 player with MD/Hi-MD player

where on the mp3 side :

coz mp3 is open format, u can find mp3 decoder everywhere on the internet

well, what's the problem with it?

the problem is whoever can make a mp3 player

so the quality of these mp3 players should have a very big difference

but it's different on the MD/Hi-MD side

if u want to make a MD player, u will have to pay a lot for that, and

U may not have access to the parts that u need to make a MD player such as MD optical head and ATRAC chips

coz Sony can deny ur request for it

my main point is :

everyone(e.g. is a very small factory in china which have only 10 staff) can make a mp3 player

but not for a MD player, only the big brand like Sony or Sharp can make a MD player

so the quality of these 2 kinds of player, is totally different in the first place

(minor points)

I am not sure of how the other brands make MD player

did they importing chips from Sony or not I am not sure on that

but if yes.....this can already quaranteed good quality on playback of MD

If your R&D-Staff is bright enough, you don't need anything from Sony,

except a very detailed description, how everything works.

You can even code your own Atrac-codec.

(Sharp did in the pre-NetMD-era).

And remember, even Sony doesn't make every part themselves.

A few examples from an MDS-S38: Motors from Sankyo,

OpAmps from Japan Radio, Glue Logic from Oki etc.

And I'm not even convinced, that Sony makes the laser pick-ups themselves.

Not necessarily. You can still make enough mistakes after the signal has left the D/A-Converter.
