Hello all, this is my first visit to this forum.

I currently have a MZ-R90 which I have used in the past for recording live music. I have been happy with the quality of the recordings.

Now I am looking into upgrading to a newer model which will do high quality recording and will also allow me to upload the music to my windows xp laptop, with the idea of converting it to CD.

Recently I have been looking at the latest models, eg MZNH700.

However I have just heard today of the the 2nd generation Hi-MD units coming out shortly.

I would appreciate your wisdom on what best to buy.

Thanks.

Wait just a few weeks and see how the 2d-generation Hi-MDs turn out to be. Either they will be irresistible or you'll be able to get a NH-700/NHF-800 or NH-900 at a lower price as an older model--a win-win for you.

Tourist, thanks so much for Your advice. It sounds very sound.

Welcome to the forums!

Well, depends on the maximum budget and what you really want. First generation Hi-MD is compatible with the old MD format, like your R70, and can upload and so forth. Second generation Hi-MD is NOT able to write old Minidiscs that are compatible with your R70 but can read discs that were written by the R70. If I were you I'd get a MZ-RH900 when they lower in price in a month or two.

Thank you Karisu for your welcome and for your advice.

Do You mean that  the 2nd gen Hi-MD cannot use any media less than 1 gig, but that it can still upload my old recorded media onto the PC?

No.

2nd gen, as with 1st-gen, can use traditional MDs, but only in HiMD mode. The newer series recorders can not record/write MD / MDLP discs that are backwards-compatible with netMD, MDLP, or legacy MD.

Both 1st and 2nd-gen HiMDs can play any MD / MDLP media.

No netMD or HiMD units can upload MD / MDLP discs to PC via USB. Sony simply don't allow it. Uploading is only allowed from HiMD-fomatted media.

edit------

Correction - thank you to Michael1980 for pointing me to this link in another thread:

It appears that 2nd-gen may be able to write to MDLP discs from SS, but not by recording in realtime. Awaiting confirmation on this.
