LowMD
The NH600 is basically a player, though you can do a line-in recording with it. It's similar in functions to your R-501 except that it records on Hi-MDs, which can hold a lot more. But make sure someone is not selling you a NH600D. The D means it is just a downloader and does not have the line-in jack, so it would be useless to you without a PC.
zerodB
In terms of the sorts of features - I'd say the 600 is exactly the same as your R501. Echoing LowMDs advice: just don't get a "600D"!!!

Wedge
The biggest bargain was the MZ-NH900, which Amazon UK were selling for £69.99 in the past few weeks. Unfortunately, they have (not surprisingly) cleared their stocks of this unit.Next best bargain - although double the cost of what you were looking at, is the MZ-NH1, once again through Amazon UK for £109.99.The NH1 is the top-of-the-range 1st generation Hi-MD. £109.99 is a very good price on this if you are looking for a Hi-MD unit. zerodB
So I guess it's not really worth going for if it is not much different to what I alredy have.....←Well, I meant it in the sense that the NH600 is sort of in the same catagory as the 501. They're both low-end, all plastic units powered by a AA battery and feature optical-in. The NH600 however, being Hi-MD, means you'll have the advantages of 1GB discs (= more music) to play with. I would consider a unit like the NH700. It's still backwards compatible, so you'll have the opportunity to record discs that still play nice with your old unit, but has a MIC in - you can do live recording + more. All in all, you probably aren't getting all the features Hi-MD has to offer unless you use it with a PC. Just my humble opinion tho.
