ive tried everything i can think of but this program is just not working for me and im really fed up of it.

recently downloaded the 3.1 installer to upgrade as i have version 2.0 which is what came with my mz-nh1

launch the installer, download the updates, then when it comes to uninstalling the older program i get an error message:

'An installation support file could not be installed.

Access Denied.'

i retry it a couple of times but get the same message. so i uninstall sonic stage completely from my computer, then reinstall it, but get the same message when it tries to install the openmg secure module, this is from the cd by the way. so i click okay and it installs the other parts for the program. then i get another error message:

'Error reading archive.

The selected file(s) couldn't get extracted.'

and then it lists some files and asks me to specify another location to find them, even though its installing from the cd.

i have tried to remove all trace of sony sonicstage from my computer through the registry as it says in the faq on this forum, then try reinstalling, but it does not work

i am so annoyed and i sincerely hope that someone will be able to help me out!!

thanks very much

Robert

Can you venture into the registry once more and delete all traces of SonicStage and OpenMG in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sony Corporation\SonicStage and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sony Corporation\OpenMG respectively.

Then choose your desired version of SonicStage 3.1 from this thread.

Let us know how it goes.

ok im currently doing this, should i remove all things which say sonicstage and openmg or should i just remove all the files in those 2 folders?

ok  the error message isnt coming up anymore now it just says the installation process has been terminated, even though i didnt terminate it

any advice?

That's really odd. At least the error message is gone. All I can say is keep trying re-installation and repeat the steps outlined preceding this post. Do remember to reboot prior to reinstallation.

should i delete all of the sony corporation in the regsitry might that help?

I think deleting the entire Sony Corporation tree may not be advisable since you may have other utilities/softwares dependent on certain entry. Perhaps you could delete entry within the Sony Corporation tree that relates directly to OpenMG, NetMD and SonicStage.

Could you elaborate the steps you have taken so far? Remember the sequence is important.

Make sure the sequence mirror the steps outlined in the FAQ:

1. Backup any existing tracks in your library via the Sonicstage backup tool. Unplug your NetMD or Hi-MD unit. Uninstall all OpenMG related software via the Add/Remove Programs control panel and reboot as necessary. This includes, but is not limited to, OpenMG 2.2, related 'Limited Patches' and the 'Secure Module', SonicStage 1.x/2.x/3.x, Simple Burner 1.x/2.x, and software by RealNetworks.

2. If you run Windows XP/Windows 2000 Professional, proceed to delete the following directories: "Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/Sony Corporation and/or Sonicstage", "Program Files/Common Files/Sony Shared", "Program Files/Sony/Sonicstage and /Personal Audio Driver". Similiar directories should be found in lesser Windows operating systems.

3. Start -> Run -> regedit. The 'Registry Editor' utility should appear on your screen. Delete the references to OpenMG located under 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Sony Corporation/Sonicstage' and 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Sony Corporation' by right-clicking on the entries.

yeah sure

i deleted those files said, then searched for anymore files and deleted those if any were found, then i proceeded to delete all references to openmg and sonicstage in the registry.

i then downloaded the 3.1 thingy and ran that, and then it stops when installing the files after it has extracted them and simply says the installation process has been terminated

its still doing it after i retried doing what you listed

Which installer version did you employ? For example: US, Asia-Pacific or European version?

Perhaps the process was terminated due to a busy server and it is not your PC's fault. If you do not need Connect music service, try installing the Asia-Pacific version.

Again, the different version of SonicStage 3.1 is within this thread.

What kind of anti-virus program do you have? I would recommend you may want to run a full system virus scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com

[you must open it in Internet Explorer]

click on "Scan now, it's free". Select your country and hit go - you'll visit another webpage; a popup or drop down window will then notify you of a ActiveX control trying to download - install it. Once that's done downloading, you'll see a thing that says 'My Computer' and your drives under it. Just check 'My Computer', then check auto clean, and then hit scan now. Delete or clean whatever viruses it finds.

that sounds a bit drastic uninstalling sp2, do you reckon that would get the job done? i cant remember when i last used it but it certainly recognised blanks discs, which it didnt do the last time i tried it

i am doing that scan now to see if anything turns up

thanks for your help

I think there is a problem with MSI (Microsoft Windows Installer)

Try this (found on the Web) :

"This is an InstallShield error which can be caused by mismatched versions of InstallShield. The PC has one version installed and the product you are installing is using another version.

- Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield

- Take the contents of the folder and move them into a temporary folder

- The InstallShield folder itself should NOT be moved

- Now run the product install again

- After the product is installed, you may move those folders back"

or try to reinstall MSI package.

  • 2 weeks later...

Polarbert...not sure whether you have found the solution for your problem. I had the same problem. I got this message saying sonic stage 3.1 installation failed all the time when I tried to install sonicstage 3.1. I have windows XP SP1 . I have some problem updating to SP2. So I downloaded microsoft windows installer 3.1 (KB893803) - which is available here.

After installing that I was able to install sonicstage 3.1 . I first got this message saying it failed , when I tried again it installed successfully. Hope it helps...
