Hiya.

Ive tried this same query on several other Boards, but it appears (so far) that no one knows as to why this is happening. Please read on...

To cut a long story short-ish, basically I bought a Sony n710, brand new, about a year ago to use for location Sampling work with my AKG c1000s mic (which I normally use in my small home studio with a Focusrite Pre Amp). But as I didnt need to use the n710 straightaway I just checked that everything was in the Box, charged the battery & tested it (in a fashion) by playing back a friends discs. It then got packed back into its box & forgotten about, until yesterday that is...

To get to grips with the recording mode of the n710 before I took it out the house (didnt get that far) I tried doing some short optical recordings directly from my PC's Optical Out to MD Optical In. (Remember this is the very first recording that this machine had ever done.) Anyway, everything went fine at first, the n710 recognised the digital input signal Ok & started to record showing the "seconds" display. It was only when I pressed the "stop" button that I sensed something was drastically wrong...

On the n710 display came the flashing message "Data Save", which from what Ive read means that the recording in memory is being written to the blank disc. The recording I made was NO longer than 20 seconds max.

20 minutes later, the n710 is STILL flashing the message "Data Save". I then thought that something must DEF. be wrong here. 20 minutes, & still not finished, to process a mere 20 second recording would make such a recording device absolutely useless.

So I tried doing a small test recording again (both Optical & Analogue which both showed as recording fine), only to get exactly the same result. This time I left the n710 for up to 30 minutes, but the "Data Save" message was again still flashing. I did this on another 3 different discs, no change. (Blank MD media Im using are those TDK 80 minute multicolour 10 packs.)

I realise I should have put this n710 through its paces as soon as I bought the thing, but to be honest I usually have confidence in a brand new product Ive spent close to £200 on, so that if I decide to use it at a later date it will work as intended.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why my n710 doesnt work, Im seriously gutted??
