What Is The Best Recording Option Ava To Me?!

Hi All!! New to this forum and I have a few questions to those of you who are in the know!!

I have a very good hi-fi setup at home, with a very well respected CD player that has a digital out (both coax and opt). I'm after the very best quality recording quality to MD to play back on my Sony MZ-N10. Now I'd love to be able to record PCM direct to get the very best recording, but that would mean that I would have to purchase a Hi-MD!! What are my best options (seeing as I brought the MZ-N10 at it's peak when it was £250 ish)?? Therefore I don't really want to go out and replace my 'on-the-move' unit.

I had always connected the N10 direct to the CD Player via Opt Out and recorded direct. Now if I got a MiniDisc deck (say Sony MDS-JB9xx) with at least Type-R or Type-S, would I get a better recording?? Or would I be better off going a step up to Hi-MD and recording PCM direct? Or get an upsampler for the CD player and feed that to a JB9xx for recording?? Decisions, decisions...

Thanks

Duncan.

I would just recommend using your existing equipment. If you notice, the N10 is Type-R, so, provided you record all your CDs in SP mode using the digital optical input you're already getting the best possible sound quality from your unit. A (Lo)MD deck wouldn't improve on this - just give you more features.

(Note that Type-S IS Type-R, just with improved playback for LP2/LP4 tracks)

An upsampler for the CD player is unlikely to do much to the sound quality since MD has the same sample rate as CDs.

You could check out Hi-MD if you want - certainly PCM would be an option, but it's probably not a viable one, given the cost of HiMD discs, and the way it will chew up your batteries...

Most on this forum would find SP perfectly acceptable for everyday listening - certainly for portable listening. While you're at home, enjoy uncompressed linear PCM from your CDs. While out and about, enjoy what your MD has to offer - why not spend that money on a decent pair of headphones, if you don't already own one? That can make a HUGE difference to your listening...

Cheers.

Thanks...like the idea of saving some money ;o)

I like the bud-type phones out there (like my current MDR-EX71's)...which other bud-types do you guys recommend? Is Shure E5c to O.T.T.??!!! Or though I've seen them on eBay for 200 notes. Or would phones around the £60 - £120 be a better bet.

Well I can't say too much here, cos I only own a couple of pairs of decent/semi-decent phones, but I use EX51s which are purported to be the same thing as 71s. I don't mind them since I've burned them in, but they are a little too muddy and fuzzy at times.

Shures are always recommended by people in this forum - in particular the E3c's, and also the Etymotics E4Ps are supposed to be the best portable phones you can get your hands on.

If you're on a buget, check this - http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=8592, or else take a look at the recommended phones topics in the "phones" sub-forum.

Sorry, I was posting about the ones you said you currently have before I realised it! I picked up a pair of the MDR-EX71s in the States when I was there in February and I think they're the best ear-buds ever -- especially nice at cutting down background noise and the low-end is unbelieveable. I especially like the fact that the cord is in two pieces so I can use them with my G755's remote control without having loads of cable swinging about.
