mrsean
hi all you ppl get to see my first post! (yay 4 me!!!) firstly what a great resource you ppl have here, big cheers for all of those kind souls imparting their knowledge to the rest of us.have been reading your posts on the future (?) of hi-md in australia, but i just want to know if Sony ever released a Hi-md deck? i've got a champion (IMHO) MDS-JE440 deck (yes i know there better one's than that, but i didn't complain at the $270 price tag 3 yrs ago), and at some stage in the future i'd like to go Hi-md.the main use for my md is recording off radio (sean's a scab i know! ) and when i get around to it, recording vinyl onto md. so, did sony ever release hi md decks? thanks all and keep preaching the good word of Mini Discs! KJ_Palmer
Hello and welcome. Sadly the answer is no, Sony have not released any Hi-MD decks, just the portables. Whether they ever will is probably a matter for conjecture (unless any one has some inside info...). Like you and many others, I'm a happy user of old MD Sony decks - the market seems to be there, so I'm not sure why they don't pull their fingers out...However there is this promising looking Onkyo deck, but that's about it, and even that's not exactly readily available... saaron
This is a major reason why I've not been interested in HiMD. In my mind the lack of a full product range including car decks indicates that Sony is not fully committed to HiMD as a format. They appear to be treating as a niche product to compete with flash-based MP3 players, which seems a really narrow focus for a format that would logically also appeal to professional recording enthusiasts. The fact that a 3rd party is first to market with a deck is definitely troubling, unless Sony is preparing to open up the format for others to carry on. Of course the Onkyo is a Japan-only product, so means little to people in Europe for sure and will only be had in the US by die-hards willing to import. Dinko
Sony people pretend to be committed to MiniDisc as a high-quality recording format:http://digital-lifestyles.info/display_pag...atforms&id=2239But they don't seem to look at minidisc's future as being a consumer audio product like flash/HDD players.
