Media Center 2005 and Sonicstage

I've noticed recently that Sony has begun to move away from their hardcore stance on utilizing first-party software in their Vaio PC's. The new lineup of Vaios out this year come with MS Media Center 2005 (subsequent updates for the OS are still iffy) which essentially eliminates the need for Sony's proprietary Vaio Media software. I've also noticed that these same Media Center Vaios come equipped with Sonicstage. Does this mean that the Atrac codec has been incorporated into the Media Center OS software or is SS a standalone utility?

In other words, can you access your Atrac media content imported onto the Vaio hard drive via Sonicstage with the Media Center software? With the new Xbox 360 touting itself as a Media Center Extender in addition to a gaming system, would it be possible to play atrac3plus files on the 360? Sorry all you PS3 fanboys, the lack of a cohesive online gaming experience has driven me to Xbox once and for all.

Hi,

I was wondering about the compatibility between SS 3.x and MCE2005. I have W2K Pro on my home computer and I think it's time to upgrade. I'm just trying to decide between XP Home/Pro/MCE 2005. I have a TV tuner card, so having MCE may be nice to have. If anyone has MCE and SS, let us know if there are any issues.... I'm personally not as concerned about SS's Library working with the Media Center software...

By "cohesive online gaming experience", do you mean "I have to pay for mine", wheras Sony online gaming is free (and cross platform).

From what i've been told by the I.T guys at work the MCE2005 is basically windows xp pro with the media center add on. It M$ way of making you buy stuff. I would rather just get the MCE add on but you can't.

So to answer your question you should be fine!!

There are places you can buy the Media Center seperatly, namely when buying certain pieces of hardware, such as a TV tuner card. If you have XP Pro, just find a way to get the Media Center and install that. That's what I did.
