arasikan
hi, I'm new to MD, and I acquired the 910 in order to make live recordings and occasionally listen to music...so after a lot of bs, I installed SS and was able to put tracks on the HI-MD. Some of the tracks, it seems, did not go through properly and whenever I try to play them on the MD, it says:CANNOT PLAYwhat's wrong? and, last week, I was able to play one of the tracks just fine... and today, it says "CANNOT PLAY" for that one. what gives!! gah sony. Arakias
I dunno what to tell you, I have an RH10 and the only album I have so far that I "couldnt play" was the Beatles Revolver - the only Beatles album I put on it as MP3 - I even uploaded it again but removed all the ID3 info, still no luck. Eventually I'll go back and try again with a new rip or different Beatles album, but not a priority.Good luck to you and hopefully someone can help you out. I guess knowing what kind of files you put on could help too. Edited June 20, 2005 by Arakias
Guest NRen2k5
It might be a problem with the optical block.I have an NH700 and I have gotten CANNOT PLAY once or twice, and this is on ATRAC3 music.
Qwakrz
Its also worth checking the MP3 format. The 2nd gen's can only play MP3's in 44KHz sampling (displays "Cannot Play" if its 32 or 48 KHz) and has to be above 48K bitrate.
arasikan
I think it has to do with this perhaps... is there any easy way to change it?gah... I hope the optical block is also not bad...bleh, maybe I'll just have to shelve the use of the MD for recording purposes only... the recordings are phenomenal for any sort of musician, esp classical.as a side note, is the recording quality due to the mic i got? (sp-bmc3... and to an extent, quality is for sure determined by mic)... or does the actual MD player itself somehow have a role as well...? Its also worth checking the MP3 format. The 2nd gen's can only play MP3's in 44KHz sampling (displays "Cannot Play" if its 32 or 48 KHz) and has to be above 48K bitrate.←
Guest NRen2k5
There is a way to change it. Re-encode the MP3 to a setting that works.Basically, Sony's players have never had "full" MP3 support. Fortunately, they support VBR fairly well, but unfortunately, it seems they only support MPEG 1 Layer 3.This means that MPEG 2 and MPEG 2.5 files won't play. I forget what exactly these encompass, but I think it's sampling rates other than 44100kHz, and bitrates under 48kbps. MDfreak
Also mono-mp3's or mp3's with another resolution than 16 bit will create problems.Officially Sony supports 32 kbps till 320 kbps stereo mp3's in CBR or VBR with a resolution of 16 bits and a samplerate of 44100 Hz.. So if one of the parameters of a mp3 do not match these criteria a mp3 shows "can't play".Als some mp3's from the internet contain so much errors that a mp3-player will not recognise it as mp3. burberlang
I had the same problem too, as i was unable to download my mp3's via sonicstage onto the mz-rh910. I have however found a way around the problem. If your using a nero you can encode mp3 files into Windows Media Audio files, with the mp3pro encoder installer. if you dont have a nero you can always download it from somewhere.Anyway, as long as you have the mp3pro encoder installer, it will encode all of your mp3s and let you download them onto your minidisc without any hassels, it may take while to encode but its worth it if you have a large music libray. If this has been of any help then let me know. arasikan
thanks... yeah, it seems to be an encoding issuebut I have resigned to the fact that the minidisc player is kind of finicky and eccentric, so i decided it wasn't worth it to put any music on it, and save music playback for my ipod.instead, i'm using my 910 as a dedicated recording device for concerts and music lessons (which is why i got it!) -- and it's excellent... super hi-fi recordings, even with the automatic gain control!! even if apple come out with an ipod which officially supports hi-fi recording, i think it will eat up a ton of power in constant disk usage, so 3 hour concerts would be a pipe dream on there... woohoo

Which is what the point behind native MP3 playback was supposed to be - to avoid transcoding. If you have MP3s that you -have- to transcode, you'd be just as well to convert them to WAV [lossless PCM] and then transcode the WAV files to the ATRAC/3/plus bitrate of your choice.MP3pro is a low-bitrate format, btw. What you're suggesting is taking a lossy format [MP3] and converting it to another, even worse, lossy format, which makes little sense to me at least. One thing I've done with finicky MP3s is make CD images containing them [with Nero] and then rip the CD image with Simple Burner. It's still transcoding, but it's certainly less harsh than using MP3pro [whichis supposed to be sub-96kbps only, and HiMD doesn't directly support the decoding of the extra high-end "recovery" information within, so it should sound a lot like crap.]. The best choice, of course, is to rip the original source from your music collection.
