Has Anyone Used A Mini Disc Player For Live Backin

I'm a vocalist/guitarist and I'd like to play solo with some

backing. It was suggested I find midi files/songs and edit (basically I want to remove guitar and vocals)

and load those to a mini disc player. I would then connect

the mini disc to my PA.

Has anyone done something like this?

Can anyone recommend a software? Is something like Cakewalk or Sonar overkill?

Can anyone recommend a mini disc player for live professional use as I've described?

Thanks!

The closest I have done was a live radio broadcast last Friday that involved a background mix of field recordings/etc. Over which we played ambient experimental sounds with guitars, keyboards, singing bowls, screwdrivers, violin bows, etc...

Basically I edited the sound files for the background track on GoldWave, all of the recordings were originally from MD.. Then we transferred the compiled track (45min or so) to HiMD through SS (Hi-Sp)... Played it back through the NH900 using line out to a mixer, and then ran the keyboard and guitars through the mixer as well... Keeping the mixer close enough to adjust levels on the fly..

Was a blast.. Recorded the live show, complete with the background recordings and live instrumentation, from the mixer to my RH10's optical in...

Perhaps I will get around to cropping some excerpts sometime to post in the gallery..

I've seen a band here in the UK that use MD backing tracks (I think its a S40 deck)

They did have a problem when they played at the Hope and Anchor that the stage was so bouncy the deck was skipping, but generally there didn't seem to be any quality problems.

Probably easier to use a deck with a remote to control the player.

I have used full sound tracks for my wife's singing. I used SP mode recorded on my R900. Worked out fine with the R900 set to "line-out" plugged into a Behringer (SP?) mixer running on some Nady amps and Yamaha reinforced loudspeaker/subwoofers. I don't know the wattage that was being run but it sounded very good.
