san4md
Hello Everyone! Newbie hereI currently own: Sony MDS-JE320 that came with a MZ-E40 player. I also own a Sony MDX-C700 car stereo..However, I haven't used any of these for a long time since I moved around alot and had them in storage. I WAS contemplating getting an ipod because I wanted to increase my capacity of songs ....But... I did have a listen to the ipod and I think the quality sucks! I am a real stickler for quality. Therefore, I dusted off my MD deck and player and I am now left wondering a few things...Here are my questions:1) Can I use my MDS- JE320 deck to record the newer MD's? 2) Can I use my player to listen the newer MD's?3) How about my car player? Will it play the newer MD's?I also have tons of blank MD's and I am hoping to still use and keep all I have.. However, my stuff is dated a bit..so I don't know where I stand..I would appreciate any clarification and guidance as to the evolution of the MD that I have missed and any compatibility issues regarding to any of the MD devices that I own.Cheers!San Edited July 29, 2005 by san4md
Christopher
Welcome to the forums. In regards to your questions, the answer is no to all of them if you're referring to Hi-MD discs.

I am totally out of the loop since I bought all my MD equipment way back.. so I am unsure of new MD technology etc..So that means that I can only use the older MD's?Nutshell, it's too old and if I want the ability to put more songs in an MD I have to get a Hi-MD, Deck, player and car stereo again?Yikes! Christopher
You can learn more about the basics of Hi-MD here: http://www.sony.net/Products/Hi-MD/To record on a Hi-MD disc, you'll need a Hi-MD device.Read some things there and hit this thread back up with any further questions you may have. Bummer for the stuff I own now.. What to do with it? I wonder if these products have any type of demand if I try to resell them in ebay? What I am ultimately trying to do is to have my favorite songs in a portable player, but considering I have over 400 CD's that's a lot of music! I was hoping to use my PC and I am interested in the best quality possible. Any advice on what would be good for me?
L7R
I suggest you to grab some of these HiMD recorders and use atrac3 (or3+). That way you'll keep the same (or better quality) what you have used to with your previous units. And you can format your old discs to ~300MB size. A440
Hey, slow down a little everyone. All the above are right: you can't use the 1GB discs in your old MD player. However, you can play the old discs (74 or 80 minutes) in a Hi-MD player. You can put music on old blank discs in the old MD formats (SP, LP2, LP4) from PC to MD in a Hi-MD unit, using SimpleBurner or SonicStage. You can probably put about 10 albums onto an 80-minute disc in LP2.The new 1 GB discs are not compatible with older MD units. But old discs are compatible with new units. They just hold less: 300 MB compared to 1 GB. And as long as you use the old MD formats, you can't upload from MD to PC.
