Hi guys, great forum here. I just started begun my journey of researching MDs today and it seems as if the MZ RH910 or MZ RH10 are the way to go. Is the only difference the light in the RH10? it costs about $100 more for those, i can live w/o the light.

and i'm using it specifically for concert recordings. Any great mics under $100-150?

thanks a lot!

Hi kimbahpnam

You will find a back lit screen amazingly useful for recording concerts, as far as mics there are alot of good choices for 100-150. Sound profesionals is a very good company they have a great reputation and a great selection of mics. Ive heard really good things about their mics with audio technica elements. How ever if you are handy with a soldering iron you can make your own microphones fairly cheap(thats what i ended up doing).

if you go to the construction projects page on this site there are a few great links on how to build mics. If you need any help just pm me id be glad to help.

Peace

Scott

Listen to some of the recordings in the Gallery (top of this page) to see how various mics sound.

I am very satisfied with Sound Professional BMC-2 mics and with Core Sound Low Cost Binaural mics--SoundPros are $35 on ebay, Core Sounds under $100. Very realistic and very concealable. They give an accurate reproduction of concert sound. I'm sure the Audio Technica mics are better to some degree, but I'm happy with these.

Get a pair of mics you can separate rather than a one-point mic--the sound will be much more enveloping.

Don't spend the extra money for cardioids (directional) because unless you really spend a bundle, you're not going to get decent bass response. And don't get Sony mics because they're bulky and don't have much bass either.

For stealth, I suggest you get the RH910 and with the money you save, get a RM-MC40ELK remote control ($75 on ebay), which lights up (and is smaller than it looks in most pictures, it's thumb-sized). You set the unit to record on manual level, leave it in pause, put it in your pocket and control it with the remote, so no one sees you playing with the recorder.

If you're in the US, www.jandr.com has the RH910 on sale right now for $175. Shop around and you might find a better price.
