Need Advice about recording Live Concert

Hi everyone

I am going to record a live concert in the next month or 2 in France. I have thought about the set up and I have decided I am going to purchase the following:

MD Recorder

HiMD RH10

WOULD THE EXTERNAL RECORDING LEVEL METER BE REQUIRED/NEEDED?

Mics -

SP SPSM 7

Advice from Sound Pro is to go with the Sub Cardiod option! I plan to aim the mics towards the stage through my shirt or something. Low sensitivity option is the one I'm going for.

Also comes with built in omni mics - that would also give me a decent sound quality - this may prove useful if things get tricky before the concert as I would be able to revert to the built in mics to again be more discreet.

Power Module - With Bass Roll Off

SP SPSB 5

I will need to be very discreet with the recording so this is why I like the above set up!

The concert will have quite a bit of bass - and this is what I am worried about. Even though the battery box above has a bass roll off - I wouldn't want to risk getting it out during concert as I might get caught out by security etc. The bass during the concert won't be too extreme but does anybody have any advice for me around this to be able to avoid using the bass roll off?

I intend on poking the mic's through my shirt or something.

Any thoughts on this? And any advice related to my set up regarding what I need to do before the concert and during the concert would be very appreciated.

I think I may also have to record on the one disc for the 220 minutes - I know there will be some loss with this but at least I won't have to change disks!

I'd also need a little guidance with regards to how I set my gear up before the concert. IE sound setting, recording setting etc.

I am going to 2 concerts; the first is about 4 rows from the stage centre and the second show is about 9 rows back to the right of stage. Does this make a difference on what I need to do?

Many Thanks

Hi,

I am currently in France ...

Ext. Recording Level: It is not needed, and i don't known their price and specifications. You can actually adjust directly on the RH10. Myself I use the RM-MC40ELK remote with my NH900, and that is very nice to check/adjust lelvel (check posts from mrsoul who use something similar ). It should be possible to enter a venue with Batt. Box. , mics, and HiMD if you hide every thing properly.

Train yourself before the 2 concerts ...

This is just my opinion, but I think that much equipment is unnecessary.

If you are worried about stealth how are you going to hide the two arms of the SPSM-7 microphones? And you have to carry the MD, the battery module and that two-armed microphone. I don't see how you are going to hide that under a shirt, which is a bad idea anyway. Under a shirt, you're going to get the fabric rubbing on the mics and a muffled sound.

If you get cardiod mics then they are going to be directional--they have to be pointed directly at the sound, and if you move and swing them away you'll hear it.

Make it easier on yourself. Get a pair of small omnis (best you can afford) with clips. You can hide the cord under a (dark) shirt and clip the mics to your collar or a hat when the light goes down and simply record. Instead of a battery box get an attenuator, just a little cord (see the thread) and you'll get a louder recording and won't have to hide the battery box. You don't need bass rolloff.

Like Roamer, I use the RM-MC40ELK with the unit hidden in a pocket.

Spending $500 on equipment still isn't going to make a concert sound like a studio recording. And the more things you have to carry and connect, the more possibilities there are for things to go wrong.
