Dear All,

I'm sorry to add more postings about problems with SonicStage since there seem to be endless others. I'm also sorry if this issue has been covered and resolved somewhere else. Did try the useful google search tool but couldn't find the answers. Sorry if I'm wasting people's time.

I'm having problems with SonicStage 3.2! It recognises my MZ-NH600 fine (as long as it hasn't had to close early the last time I used it, see below) and plays the tracks fine. However when I try to transfer tracks to My Library it hardly ever works. More often than not I get an error message saying "Omgjbox.exe has encountered an error and needs to close". Sometimes it just shuts down in the middle of the transferring a track with no explanation or warning.

I checked that I have the lastest Window updates and am virus and spyware free and then tried doing a clean re-installation of SonicStage as the pinned topic ("Hi-MD/NetMD Software FAQ., Are things not working? Check inside") suggested. (Although I didn't have the 1st 2 directories in the "to delete list" and I didn't disable my Norton antivirus software. Was this a mistake? Also is RealPlayer part of RealNetworks, because, thinking it might be, I deleted the former. (Didn't have anything which looked like RealNetworks though.) Was this a stupid mistake too?) However, this hasn't improved anything, if anything, it works even less frequently now - one or no tracks are transferred before it has to shut down.

Not really knowing anything about computers, (though I'm learning a bit through this incredible site! :D ) I'm quite hesitant to try it again.

Also, now I have 2 other issues:

- I no longer have MD Simple Burner, (even though I installed SS3.2 through the link on the pinned topic above.) I had it before when I downloaded SS3.2 from your link initially.

- I backed up all the tracks I'd been able to transfer to My Library on both the hard drive and a CD (I'm paranoid!) After reinstallation of SS3.2, when I tried to re-import them from the hard drive, I'd lost all "unlimited copying rights" from my analogue recordings, and it wouldn't even play them because I didn't have the rights. Thankfully, the CD backup worked fine, so it's all OK. But does anyone know why this happened?/ How I could prevent it in future? Can just keep backing up on CDs, it's not really a problem.

Details:

XP, Service Pack 2

SonicStage 3.2, (no simple burner at present, see above)

(Haven't installed any CODEC packs on system as far as I'm aware. Searched for FFDSHOW and Explorer can't find it.)

Unit: MZ-NH600

Intel Pentium 4, 2.5GHz

512MB RAM

Not sure abt USB interface version, in the USB part of the Driver Information under Systems it says "Intel® 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller - 24CD" Am I right in thinking this means it's version 2.0? The unit is plugged in at the front of the computer, directly into it, not at the back, I'm not sure whether this makes a difference.

Not sure what else was running when errors occur, no other applications were open. I have a long list of processes that seem to load on boot but have no idea what they do, there are 52 of them at the moment. It seems excessive!

Here's a list of some of the stuff open in the background:

The Webshots Desktop 2.0.0.4324

Mouse Driver Version 9.79

Picassa Version 2.0.0

Belkin Wireless Network USB Utility version 1.0.3.5, driver version 1.2.0.0, firmware version 0.5.0.0

Norton Antivirus 2005 version 11.0.11.4

Retrospect Express HD 1.0.196

From looking at the Processes list, I think there may also be:

FotoStation Easy

Those are all the ones I recognise, but I can list all the 52 going on at the moment if you think this would help.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post, I'm very sorry it's so long. And thank you for any advice you can offer.

Thanks for your time Sebastianf.

Yes, I did the clean install using the official SS 3.2 installer from Sony Site.

I'm trying this again though and will turn the firewall and Norton off like you suggest.

I'll also try the MDAC repair utility. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks so much for all your help. ^_^

Sorry for taking time to reply, been trying to make the MDAC repair utility work and also been checking out all the postings brought to my attention by Kurisu about Sony discontinuing the Hi-MD format... Can't believe they might be doing this when it's such a fantastic product...

As for SonicStage 3.2....

As Sebastianf suggested, turned off the firewall and Norton and did a clean install using the official SS 3.2 installer from Sony Site.

It still didn't work consistently, only transferring a couple of tracks before the omgjbox.exe error came back. Tried downloading MDAC repair utility from the downloads page, but couldn't get it to work like the macropool website. So in frustration left it for a couple for days.

Tried using SS3.2 again, and it transferred like 30 tracks to the PC without a hitch! It was incredible! :D Unfortunately, I had to go out and take my MD player with me so had to disconnect it, and it hasn't worked since! It always gets 50% of the way through the 1st transfer before the familiar Omgjbox.exe error or it just shuts down without warning. (The thing is, don't understand why it worked then and doesn't now - haven't done anything differently at all.)

Before coming back to the boards to ask for more help, tried downloading the MDAC Repair Utility again (from the downloads section here.) Following the instructions on the Macropool website, tried all their suggestions as far as I could but no joy.

Couldn't manually install most current MDAC Release for XP SP2 according to Macropool website. (However just noticed the help on "database problems with SS on the Hi-MD Software FAQ" see below.)

Thanks for even taking the time to read this. :)

Man, how stupid am I?

Sorry for the last posting, I'd not read that Quote about database problems with SS from the "Hi-MD/NetMD Software FAQ., Are things not working? Check inside"

Will just try that now. Sorry again, this actually is properly wasting people's time. Sorry

Just an update, sorry it's taken a while, not been recording much lately so couldn't test out whether uploading worked.

Uninstalled and reinstalled SS3.2 again (3rd time) as per FAQ instructions.

Tried MDAC repair Utility as per FAQ instructions.

Neither seemed to make a difference still got Omgjbox.exe error message.

Read A440's advice about not really doing any editing on the Hi-MD unit (in this thread: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=12503.) & so removed the automatic track-marking that I'd been doing since I'd bought the unit. No longer doing any editing on recorder except adding tack-marks in appropriate places - connecting to PC and doing it all there. SS3.2 now seems to be uploading fine! Think Omgjbox.exe error has only come up once. (I'm sure it'll be back though! ;) )

So I think the main problem may have been the editing before uploading.

But I can now use my player properly! (As long as I don't leave it recording to the end of the disc, cos then get the "FORMAT ERROR DISC" message on the player. But so long as I don't record to the end, it all works!)

So just wanted to say THANK YOU! to everyone for their help and for the quantity of friendly knowledge, advice and wit! on these forums and thanks to the administrators too, for keeping this place going. All you people are amazing. Thank you so much. :)

I have the same problem you have, and it's frustrating. Did you find some sort of solution since?

EDIT: And I don't really understand the "no editing before uploading" solution you bring up.

I really sympathise with your frustration Houou. :( I hope what worked for me will also work for you.

  • Try doing clean install of SonicStage 3.2 as this pinned topic describes. (Make sure you back up your library 1st, both on removable media and your hard-drive, in case one doesn't work!) http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=8071
  • Also try the MDAC Repair Utility (as descibed in the quote section of the same topic.)
  • Then make sure you just use SonicStage to do all your editing. That's what I meant by "no editing before uploading". It's something a lot of the knowledgeable people on this forum seemed to mention. This means only record using your recorder, don't delete or label tracks, certainly don't use automatic track-marking or combine tracks. (I was doing all of these before, and since I stopped it seems to be working!)

I go through a recording and add track-marks using the recorder, but I think even that's been advised against. But do ALL your editing through SonicStage. That seems to work for me with this clean install of SS3.2.

(I also found that not watching my PC when it was transferring a track seemed to correlate with the track being successfully transferred! But maybe that's just co-incidence! ;) )

Also, read people's advice about transferring tracks on this forum. Like

* not having other programmes running at the same time,

* not converting files to .wav files at the time of transfer etc.

Hope this helps and it works for you too. Keep trying, it's a beautiful thing when it works. :)

I found out the hard way myself about editing on the HiMD units themselves.

Sorry about that Raintheory, I've got a couple of those trashed discs too! (At least it's all removable media though! ;) ) Thanks so much to you and all the other users who've shared their hard-earned knowledge about the quirks of the relationship between the units and software.

  • 1 year later...

Just a quick word on the Macropool MDAC Repair program... Don't buy it!

After having issues with my SonicStage, I followed the instructions of others suggesting the MDAC repair tool. Maybe it would have worked, if only Macropool wasn't selling dodgy programs!

I paid my money for the program and for "support" from Macropool, if needed. I got the program, attempted to run it, but it kept shutting itself down. I emailed support for urgent help and instructions, and received NO reply whatsoever.

So, 3 days later, I thought I'd warn others from wasting their money as I have done. Macropool's MDAC repair tool will only steal from your bank account, and not even come close to fixing your SonicStage woes. Not impressed.

The MDAC Repair Tool is in Downloads free, so no, don't buy it.

http://forums.minidisc.org/downloads/details.php?file=8

And it has helped a lot of people, as a search through these forums would show.

Don't know why you're having trouble with it, and I hope Macropool does get back to you for the $5 you sent them. (Did that really put a serious dent in your back account?)

But it's not particularly "dodgy" software for many other people who have used it with no problem.

Meanwhile, can you describe more fully your problem with SonicStage? The MDAC Repair tool is useful when SonicStage won't recognize the unit. Is that your problem?
