Hi all,

I've waded through the archives and, excuse me if I'm missing something, but is there any sort of file recovery utility/method/service?????

My daughter's MZ-S1 has taken unblievable abuse for 2+ years, and, as J.C. Swayze sez -- it take a lickin'n .....

well, it refused to read her disc the other day -- just outta the blue it looked at a disc she'd been playing for weeks and called it blank. I took a disc of mine, put it in, and it worked fine. then I took it out and tried hers again and it showed Blank Disc. I put mine back in and ...... blank disc. I took it over to my MZn707 and.... Blank disc. I put it in the NF520D -- blank disc. this unit also krapped out another of her discs.

i plugged the 707 into the PC and attempted to read the disc using sonicstage -- blank disk. that's for a Sony 80 min. For her JVC 74 min it shows NO DATA. All of these disks have data on them; the record function has never been accessesd.

the S1 has reached the end of a long and exciting life -- I plan to replace it. the other two seem OK, but I don't want to push it.

I do, whowever, NEED THE DISC info to be restored. it's a live show I am kinda attached to. does anyone do data recovery for MD?? is there a service available, or software out there??

btw. I installed the latest sonicstage, and tried to read from the 707 on both XP and W98SE systems.

I think that your unit's optical head is defective.

About recovering the info: You could do a toc cloning from another disc. I have a similar problem once and solved that way.

http://www.minidisc.org/cloning_procedure.html

There is a procedure for cloning toc. the article is written for a deck but you can do it with your portable. You have to enter service mode (do it at your own risk!) so search you model's way to enter it and be very carefull while you are in it.

Let me know if you solve the problem

thanks for the link to the TOC cloning stuff. I looked it over but, I dunno.... I'm too anal to get past the differencces between the instructions (for a deck) and the operation of my unit. plus, I REALLY like my 707, and am not willing to jeopardize its integrity to fix a disk. I might try it with the s1, but I'm afraid I'd do even more damage to the disc, and perhaps lessen the chances of actually recovering the data.

The first time I put a (SONY) memory stick in my card reader and got an incorrect format/blank disc indication on my PC, I went out and bought a digital picture recovery utility that has saved my ass too many times already. Any thoughts on mini disc data???

I really would like to get that disk back AND WILL PAY SOMEONE WHO HAS THE EXPERTISE to recover the lost info on the disk (15 tracks, 77 minutes of songs).

peace (means no war)

tim
