NW-E507 & Unicode?

Is the NW-E507 unicode capable? Specificly (as I assume this would be a property of unicode...), is it capable of showing hebrew characters?

I know Sonic Stage isnt unicode capable, but is the player itself capable? After reading a bit about the connect player, i've been getting the idea that it's unicode capable, although i'm pretty sure it won't work with my E507...

My NW-E405 displays Cyrillic perfectly, which surprised me. So... just name some of your files in hebrew and give it a try, won't hurt.

I did, I get white squares

I was thinking its perhaps Sonic stage makin em screwy since it has trouble importing filenames in hebrew... o well, i'll give it another go just to be sure ^^

If SONY wants to get it right they should once for all fix these UNICODE problems. Every SONY programs and devices should display any languages!!!

The applocale solution is far from perfect: if you like hebrew songs, arab music, japanese pop, chinese traditional tunes etc., sure you piss SONY off!!! you're not the kind of consumer they want to bother with...

The player themselves are unicode compliant. OpenMG is as well, it is only SonicStage ( and Connect it seems ) that are not compliant. Running your Windows with the right settings will allow you to transfer without losing the unicode encodings. Or, just use AppLoc.

me too. But my e507 shows Chinese characters and Japanese kana in a very strange, ugly shape which is almost unbearable. However, they are indeed right fonts.

I don't know if it's the right display for Unicode or just because I use English version Windows XP running under specific non-Unicode environment.

I will give an example here. "kitto" in japanese writing system consists of three kanas--ki, tsu, to. The first one and last one are bigger than the middle. However, in display of my E507, the first and the last are in normal size, but the middle "to" is abnormally bigger than those two. Things also happen in cases like "mashyo", "deshyo",etc...

For hangul, I think it's perfect as you said.

okay, I figured out the "ugly font" problem by myself. It's the case of firmware. The 2.0 firmware I used to update was US version, so when you upload Japanese and Chinese songs to the player, it will display as very strange and ugly shapes, especially for the Japanese kana.

Now I've updated my player using Japanese version of firmware 2.0 downloaded from http://www.sony.jp/support/p-audio/content...w_e405_vup.html, now everything is fine and I am happy:)

Figures. Sony USA thinks that kanji is the source of all evil. With the recent declaration of english as the US' official language by the US senate, Sony USA will probably ban kanji display capability altogether on all US units. Just think about it, why SS is not unicode. Very ironic considering Sony is a Japanese company (vs Apple/Dell. My iPod and DellDJ can display kanji perfectly without having to resort to registry edits/applocale).

On the same note, Sony doesn't really have an Israeli presence... (only ericsson does...)... Anyone know of a region who'se firmware could possibly support hebrew? =/

I'm not sure if my player is using the proper font, but my Chinese characters look fine. A bit blocky maybe but I think that's because the screen is so low-res. It's been a while since I had Japanese songs on my player so I don't know if it is display that properly, although I don't recall the fonts being off. I do use the US firmware.

What firmware/software you use should not change the characters the player can display. The player itself is unicode capable, although there is the slight possibility that the fonts are included with the firmware. Give me a line of Hebrew text and I can tag a mp3 with it and put it on and see if it displays properly.
