Questions about the MZ-RH10/MZ-RH910 -

Hi everyone!

I have some questions concerning the MZ-RH10/MZ-RH910

-How fast is the transfer from Hi-MD to SonicStage to wav… lets say for a 60min recording?

-How does the “track mark” function work concerning the upload to sonic stage and then converting to wav… does it make one wav file with markers or a lot of small wav files? And does it have a maximum of markers.

-Does the Auto Time-Mark can be turn off on theses units?

-Except the wav upload to mac, is there any functionality difference between the Mz-M10/MZ-M100?

Thanks in advance!

Jérôme

I don't have an RH10 (but assuming it works essentially the same as my NH900):

1. Speed might depend somewhat on your system. On my system (P4, 500mb RAM) I can upload 60 minutes of live recording (Hi-LP mode) in a coupla minutes. I've never timed it, but it's just a couple of minutes. Once uploaded, they have to be saved / converted to .wav files as a separate operation. Another coupla minutes for 60-minutes worth of recordings.

2. If I have inserted track marks in my recordings, they upload in Sonic Stage as separate tracks. When I burn such live recordings to CD, such as my college kid's concerts, I insert track marks as I record, and use Nero to edit and burn to CD which has an option to NOT include a pause between tracks. Thus, playback is seamless between tracks although there are separarate tracks on the CD.

3. don't know about auto-track mark settings

4. From what I've read, the M10 and M100 units are functionally identical to their RH10 and RH100 brethren, except they are packaged differently and, as you already know, come with software to be able to upload to MAC machines. I have been contemplating one of these guys for my kid, Joe College, who had to have an Apple Powerbook...grrrr

I have an RH10 and I should be able to divulge at least some info for you.

-How fast is the transfer from Hi-MD to SonicStage to wav… lets say for a 60min recording?
It really depends on a number of factors:
  • The original format you recorded in (PCM WAV, HiSP, HiLP). If you recorded in PCM (which you can do with the RH10) then the initial transferral of the file will take longer than, say, the same recording in HiSP or HiLP mode.

  • The USB port you're using. Granted, MD units these days are mainly USB2.0 compatible but if you're using USB1.1 on your PC then the transfer is going to be somewhat slower.

  • The speed of your PC's CPU - self explanitory... faster PCs (2Ghz, 3Ghz etc) will convert the file into WAV fairly quickly. Slower PCs (Under 1Ghz) will take a little more time.

Going by my experience of transferring HiSP recordings of my lectures at Uni on a 1.6Ghz laptop with USB2.0, it takes roughly 3 minutes to transfer. I've never converted from OMA/OMG to WAV but if it's anything like converting MP3s to WAV then it should only take another couple of minutes. When any recording is sent to SonicStage, it will make it a .oma file regardless of which format you recorded it in on the MD unit and will need converting to WAV. However if you originally recorded in PCM WAV then the conversion is pretty much instant (2-3 seconds) because it's already technically in WAV format.

-How does the “track mark” function work concerning the upload to sonic stage and then converting to wav… does it make one wav file with markers or a lot of small wav files? And does it have a maximum of markers.
When you place a track mark in a recording on an MD unit, it literally splits the recording so it becomes two seperate recordings AFAIK. So if one long recording has been split 4-5 times then, when transferring to SonicStage, you'd be transferring 4-5 seperate recordings. Hence, any conversions to WAV will also be seperate. I don't know if there are any limits to the number of track marks you can place.

-Does the Auto Time-Mark can be turn off on theses units?
With the RH10 you can turn it off. I think it's off by default. But if you wanted to, you could set a TM timer for every 1 - 60 minutes.

-Except the wav upload to mac, is there any functionality difference between the Mz-M10/MZ-M100?
Sorry, I can't answer that question. No idea. The only portable MD units I have are the R70, N1 and RH10.

Sorry this is long winded but I hope it helps.
