A friend of mine is offering me a MZ-N505 and 4 blank discs for 20 bucks and I've been lookin for a good deal on a backup player. My question is, if I have a standard disc formatted to hi-md or a hi-md disc recorded in lp4, will it play on a netmd unit? If not, what do I do to make the the disc is in netmd mode and not hi-md.

No it will not play.

A standard disc formatted to HiMD will not play on a NetMD-only device.

A HiMD disc loaded with LP4 contents will not play on a NetMD-only device.

If I remember correctly from my old NetMD player, if you take a regular disc which has been formatted in HiMD mode and then you format it using the NetMD player, it will be compatible with NetMD.

However: if you take a HiMD (1GB) disc, the NetMD player will not recognize the disc. There's nothing you can do about that.

So I just stick the formatted disc in the player and load up sonicstage and it will format it for me?

I have made a few discs in NetMD mode using my RH10 that were playable on older LP decks. On the transfer screen in SonicStage there is a drop-down box where you can choose HiMD or NetMD. I don't think you need to use a NetMD recorder to make the discs.
