Hey folks.

I've been doing research on MD technology but have found conflicting statements as to the launch date. It looks like it was launched in Japan in 1992, but when did it come over to the States? '94 seems to be the year that they really pushed it over here, but had it been around for 2 years prior to that?

Í've read a lot of the papers found on this site and found them quite informative. But I'm just a bit confused on these dates.

Any help or info would be great. Thanks!

This says the US launch was late 1992.

Also, not germane to your question, but here's the propaganda version of its development:

Great link to the Sony history, A440. I love corporate propaganda writing..

Here's a great quote:

To ensure that the final product would be portable, technology to reduce track skipping when jostled was simultaneously developed with a new shockproof memory based on semiconductors.

Hmm. Other than, say.. vacuum tubes, is anyone out there aware of some other type of memory than semiconductor? Talk about blowhards.

Is that so?!

Sony clearly explained the difference between the CD and MD; the CD was for leisure listening and the MD for enjoying music anywhere and anytime, much like the Walkman.
