Question

Hi everyone

I've just got an NWZ-S639f walkman to upgrade my NWZ-A808 atrac walkman. I'm very impressed with the unit but there's a few things that seem like downgrades of my previous player and I have to say because of this I'm missing sonicstage a bit! My biggest gripe is that the new walkman lists artists starting with "The" under T, my old walkman cleverly ignored the prefix. I'm also missing the bookmarking feature that my old player had and the automatic rating so you could see your most played music.

Does anyone have any solutions, or alternatives, for these missing features?

Cheers

Hi Juli,

I remember you from Atraclife!!!

I agree with you. IMO the best player Sony have released so far was the NW-A80* series for reasons you outlined. In addition, the build quality of these devices ( including the MTP NWZ series) was outstanding. It seems to me that SONY are compensating for the obvious need to drop retail prices by offering cheaper materials and poorer design overall. I love my NWZ-A818 but I don't have enough capacity. I'm not too sure about all of this "Touch OLED" stuff to be honest, I just want excellent design and build quality, excellent SQ and loads of capacity. For now even the the new X series really doesn't get my heart racing ( maybe I'm getting too old ). As for the W-series, I would be afraid of the funny looks to be honest, it reminds me of those silly "Star Trek" bluetooth hands free thingys..................not for me to be honest.

Hi Anthony, nice to see you :)

The thing that excites me the most about the Zeddex (I just can't be bothered to keep referring to it as the NWZ-X1000!!), is the new amplifier they're using in it, it's the same as the one they use in their home stereos and the same that is in my Sony speaker cradle (which sounds really good!) So I'm postive that sound quality is going to be the biggest improvement overall, not that I have any complaints about the sound, but it's nice that they're implementing something new for a change.

As far as the capacity is concerned, 32GB is more than enough for me. I have around 25Gb of music on the Touch and that's a LOT of music, so I'm happy with the Zeddex capacity and potential sq improvement. But I would really really like on-the-go playlists. Just today, I was listening to my 808, and it was so nce to add tracks as I went along. I just can't make playlists in advance, because I don't know what I want to listen to until I'm actually ready to listen. I'd also like to be able to delete directly from the player, but I can live without the ratings. And anything gapless I need I'll just transfer in wav/pcm, there's enough room on it to be able to do that.

So I'm pretty excited about it I have to say! I think it looks nice (not sure about the Speckledy Hen effect  ) - but so long as it sounds REALLY GOOD, and has long battery life, I'll be happy with it.

Greetings to Antony and Juli. Hope more of us from Atraclife can migrate to this forum?!

Got to agree 100% re the 800 series. It remains my favourite player of all time. The build and physical size are perfect(IMHO) and I love on the go playlists at the touch of a button. I always thought that atrac ( and especially Sonic stage) got criticised more than it should. Maybe the fact that my music is all cds and thus I have no need to download/dragdrop mp3s meant that I didnt really go along with the route sony took with 820 and 630 series. Having said that - I did end up getting an 829 ( for 16gb capacity) and just lately a 639 ( for the FM radio) I tend to travel with 2 players on me now - the 639 but also the 808.

It's a pity that over the years there has been almost a complete lack of firmware upgrades for Sony daps ( cf say the creatives?) - I wonder just how easy it would be to add some of the missing features?? Maybe even third party firmware/software to enable some of these things?? ( I keep an eye on Archos and Ipod forums and note the thriving alternatives that are around to add features/use alternative software etc. Tis a pity that Sony have always been harder/tighter or whatever re this kind of thing??? The hardware tends to be excellent generally - but software side less good (IMHO)

As a self confessed "sony addict" I see myself eventually getting the Zeddex (like it juli!) - but if only Sony could produce an "800" with say 32gb capacity I'd buy that in an instant!!

Regards.
