MZ-N707 Write Problems

My MZ-N707 is having a strange problem where within 20 minutes remaining in SP mode (I usually record in LP4 via analog line in) it records to the MD but seems to have a problem focusing the write block and ends up with the tracks being almost correct but with segments of some other tracks being written instead. If only one track is written it usually affects earlier tracks in the same way and recording anything afterwards has the same problem.

I've checked it out thoroughly with different discs and recording modes but the problem is the same but doesn't occur on the first 50 mins of recordings which is confusing.

Sounds like either the worm-screw (the threaded rod that moves the laser back and forth) needs lubrication, or it has some crud on it which blocks that laser from moving back and forth freely. You can open the machine up, or if you don't want to do that just open the door normall and use a Q-tip to push the laser block all the way to the right and then back to the left as far as it will go. Don't press directly on the laser lens. This might clear it. Otherwise you can remove the four screws holding on the door casing life all of that (door casing & circuit board) up and that will allow you to apply some silicon grease to the spindle/worm-screw.

If that doesn't help then the motor that drives the worm-screw might be getting tired and worn-out. It is possible to replace this, but you have to find a spare (i.e. from a broken unit) and you need some very delicate soldering skills. It's not a minor job.

Bumping this because I think my MZ-N707 has developed the same problem. It only records from either USB or line in for the first 15 minutes of a disc (SP). I've tried cleaning the worm screw and dabbed some WD-40 onto it (since its Sunday and no shops are open for me to get some silicon grease) but it doesn't seem to have worked.

Is there any way to test if its the motor or the screw.

one possibility here is that the ribbon cable that connects to the recording/overwrite heads is going bad. In this case, when the ribbon cable extends to a specific point, there is a loss of power or signal to the heads which could cause problems such as this.

There is a thread around here somewhere detailing how to repiar the ribbon cable with a little soldering skill.

As well, they should not use the unit anymore as it will start randomly erasing discs.
