Having a problems with sonicstage 3.3

Every time I try to transfer/convert to atrac3plus any mp3's that I have on my library,

it just skips the files through and then says "Transfers are not allowed." and lists the files I tried to transfer.

Does not matter if I try to transfer to my MD (MZ-NH700) or PSP.

Nor does it matter what format (CBR or VBR) mp3's I try to transfer.

If I convert from original CD to atrac3plus then the transfer works nicely.

edit: And converting from WAV files works too.

I had sonicstage 3.2 previously installed, and it worked fine the last time I used it (about 6 months ago)

Tried uninstalling all traces of sonicstage & all databases + registry.

Removed ffdshow completely to be sure, although I had it working nicely with SS 3.2. (by removing mp3 handling from it)

windows XP pro SP2 with all updates.

Any ideas would be welcome :)

  • 4 weeks later...

I can't seem to upload or convert any mp3s via SS3.4 either.

Last week I was using SonicStage 2.1 and I could transfer mp3s from my hard drive to my MZ-NHF800 with only the occasional file that wouldn't convert.

I just upgraded to SS3.4 on the weekend, and now I can't transfer any mp3s at all. I did get one file to transfer, but it didn't really copy properly (it was mostly silence with the occasional pop and click).

I get an error message saying "An error occurred while transferring. Transfers are not allowed".

I only just got my first Minidisc player, so I'm a bit unsure of how the thing is supposed to work. I thought maybe it was a DRM issue, but after reading a heap of posts, that doesn't make a lot of sense. What is going on?

Can I just uninstall 3.4 and go back to 2.1?

But Dex, how should they fix the system codec?

If it's just something simple to install or update, that'd be cool.

I did manage to get one file (out of about 40 that I tried) to covert and transfer perfectly, so I'm a bit baffled why it will work occasionally. Especially when all the files are ripped with the same programs, are named in the same format and use the same ID3 tags.

I installed a LAME codec years ago, so maybe I should just update it? But I thought that was for encoding, and to me this seems to be a problem of decoding and converting, although I don't really know a lot about this stuff.

I didn't really buy the minidisc player for mp3s, so it's not a disaster, but I've got a stack of mp3 CDs that I use in my stereo, so it'd be good if I could play them on the MD.

lame isn't a system codec. It's either a .exe or .dll which is usable from any given program that knows how to use it. SS relies on directshow filters, which lame is not one of.

As for how to fix it, count me lazy on this one - there are so many possible things to go wrong with just a mp3 dshow codec alone .. trying to step a user through finding if they have one that's misbehaving or is missing is, IMO, something that has to be done by actually looking at their system. Telling them to go to the codecs control panel is next to useless advice, because even if there's anything obvious listed, there's no telling if it's working or not just from the information presented there. Aside from this, there are other dshow/ACM codecs that install and don't show up in that list at all, yet have the gaul to hijack other filters already installed [some DVD software include codecs like this].

IMO, there is no simple advice on how to fix this, because there are too many fault permutations involved.

If someone is really desperate and is willing to use remote desktop to allow me to try and figure out what the issue is, I'm usually game.
